If the same contact appears in multiple groups, you get duplicate entries in the BBDB file. Name isn't sufficient to match on -- I think what needs to happen is that the contacts with the same names and at least one email address or phone number in common should be merged.

Google contacts allows for duplicate contacts, at least if only name is considered. There is a merge feature that can join multiple contacts into one, but I'm not sure if merged contacts are then exposed as one or multiple contacts to charrington's request(s).
