Is there a particular reason why feh does not do animated images?

Imlib2 does not support it, and feh uses Imlib2 for all images.

I'm not planning to support animation, feh is meant to be a static image viewer ;-)

mplayer supports gif images though, maybe that helps.

-> wontfix, sorry

http://github.com/muennich/sxiv support it.

yeah... about that...
There are two very annoying bugs in sxiv involving gif and webp animations, that weren't and aren't fixed: the one where you zoom in/scale up and the animation slows down, and the one where sxiv is unable to play animations with very little delay between frames (dunno, <30ms ?) at correct speeds, the correct speeds can be observed in browsers.
Also, sxiv does not support apng (animated png), mpv does.
Don't know if it's true, but it looks like it makes more sense to play animations in a video player like mpv, or in a browser.
