Please support default substitution like this:
https://docs.docker.com/compose/compose-file/#variable-substitution

${VARIABLE:-default} evaluates to default if VARIABLE is unset or empty in the environment.
${VARIABLE-default} evaluates to default only if VARIABLE is unset in the environment.
