## Introduction
The <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control is a container for a group of controls. A <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control must always be contained within a <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.MultiView> control. Only one <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control at a time can be defined as the active view within a <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.MultiView> control.
The <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.MultiView.ActiveViewIndex%2A> property specifies the active <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control within the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.MultiView.Views%2A> collection of a <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.MultiView> control. The active view control is rendered to the client, as long as the containing <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.MultiView> control is visible. Use the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View.Visible%2A> property to determine whether a <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control and its child controls are visible on the page and rendered to the client.
A <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control can contain controls of any type, including other <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.MultiView> controls. A <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control does not support any style properties. To apply styles to a <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control, add one or more <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.Panel> controls to the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control.
The <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> class provides the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View.Activate> and <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View.Deactivate> events. The <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View.Activate> event is raised when the current <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control becomes the active view. This occurs when the value of the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.MultiView.ActiveViewIndex%2A> property changes or the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.MultiView.SetActiveView%2A> method is called to specify a different <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control. For example, if `View1` is the active view within a <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.MultiView> control, when the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.MultiView.ActiveViewIndex%2A> property changes to specify `View2`, the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View.Activate> event is raised for `View2` and the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View.Deactivate> event is raised for `View1`.
To allow users to navigate between multiple <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> controls within a <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.MultiView> control, you can add a <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.LinkButton> or <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button> control to each <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control. Set the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.LinkButton> or <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button> control's `CommandName` property to the ID of the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control to navigate to. For a code example, see <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.MultiView.ActiveViewChanged>.
For more information on manipulating <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> controls within a <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.MultiView> control, see the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.MultiView> topic.

## Declarative Syntax
```
<asp:View
EnableTheming="True|False"
EnableViewState="True|False"
ID="string"
OnActivate="Activate event handler"
OnDataBinding="DataBinding event handler"
OnDeactivate="Deactivate event handler"
OnDisposed="Disposed event handler"
OnLoad="Load event handler"
OnPreRender="PreRender event handler"
OnUnload="Unload event handler"
SkinID="string"
Visible="True|False"
```
## Examples
The following code example demonstrates how to create a <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.MultiView> control that contains three <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> controls. The first time the page is loaded, `DefaultView` is set as the active view. Each <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control contains link buttons to allow the user to navigate to different views. Note that each <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control contains a <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.Panel> control to allow styles to be applied.

## Remarks
The <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View.EnableTheming%2A> property indicates whether themes are enabled for the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control. The <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View.EnableTheming%2A> property also affects whether themes are enabled for the controls contained in its <xref:System.Web.UI.Control.Controls%2A?displayProperty=nameWithType> collection. When the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View.EnableTheming%2A> property is `true`, the application's theme directory is searched for control skins to apply. If no skin for the particular control exists in the theme directory, a skin is not applied. When the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View.EnableTheming%2A> property is `false`, the theme directory is not searched and the contents of the <xref:System.Web.UI.Control.SkinID%2A> property are not used.
A control can override the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View.EnableTheming%2A> value set by its parent control, or by the containing page. For example, if a <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control has <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View.EnableTheming%2A> set to `false`, you can selectively apply themes to child controls contained within the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control by setting the <xref:System.Web.UI.Control.EnableTheming%2A> property to `true` on the individual child controls.

## Remarks
Use the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View.Visible%2A> property to determine whether the current <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control is visible and rendered to the client. For a <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control to be visible on the rendered page, it must be the active view in its containing <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.MultiView> control, and the containing <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.MultiView> control must be visible. If the containing <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.MultiView> control is not visible on the page, or if the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control is not the active view, then the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View> control and its child controls are not rendered.
> [!NOTE]
> The <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View.Visible%2A> property is set internally based on the visibility and active view for the containing parent control. If you set this property at run time, an <xref:System.InvalidOperationException> exception is thrown. If you set the <xref:System.Web.UI.WebControls.View.Visible%2A> property at design time, any changes to the property are ignored.
