It could be, but the purpose of this color scheme is to be as faithful as possible to the original. And in the original theme the text style is normal for comment.
But you can override the Comment highlight group to add 'italic' or 'bold' as you want.
Because I exposed the color palette in use and an helper function, now if you really want to differ from the original theme you can put in your .vimrc something like:
I think this great looking colour scheme could be improved by subtle use of italic and bold fonts for things like comments.
