Since this project is dead, here are two modern alternatives:

Trilium Notes
Trilium Notes is a hierarchical note taking application with focus on building large personal knowledge bases.
https://github.com/zadam/trilium

Cherrytree
A hierarchical note taking application, featuring rich text and syntax highlighting, storing data in a single xml or sqlite file.

hijacking.. RightNote can import .knt, but loses links.

And why those application should be better than keynote?
Both looks quite primitive and totally behind keynote, that is a very robust and reliable program.
I use it since 2006 and never lost data. I use it for everything (word processing, planning, note taking) and I absolutely could not work without it. Most useful program ever.
OMG, only now I found that trillium.exe is 108 megabyte! absolutely a bloated dinosaur!
Keynote is small, fast and have a nice and more comprensible graphic interface.
Absolutely no match!

RightNote can import .knt, but loses links.

What links? I just tried it, freeware version, skipped testing pro features completely, imported my Keynote file, all links are there, work just fine and I tested posting new links, they work without problems.

@Ferenst

Ferenst commented May 24, 2020

What links?

Inter-note links. Developer retorted that KeynoteNF importing is unusual and won’t justify development time. Otherwise, (give or take) it’s functionality on-par to KeyNoteNF. I paid for lifetime subscription and use it persistently. Periodically, it’s discounted.

AlanSP1 commented May 24, 2020

Inter-note links.

What are these exactly? When you link one note within other note? Didn't used that (not even knew about this), so far only used external links.

So far I satisfied with both programs, KeyNoteNF and RightNote are very similar, with RightNote looks faster and with more options on first look (but didn't had time to check everything in so short time, just read from you about it). And, speaking about RightNote, I refer to free version, not paid, just to be clear.

Only thing where KeyNoteNF is "better" is much smaller file size, but for todays disks it is not that important. I plan to use both for some time and to see how they behave, but all in all, RightNote looks really great and is constantly developed from what I saw on their website. Thanks for info about it.

Just watching y'all's exchange here. A long time ago I switched from KeyNote to TreeDBNotes. TDB is absolutely wonderful. The only thing it doesn't do that KeyNote does is that it can't display text files as notes. But it has a lot more features. The website still exists, but it hasn't been developed further in years. I use it every day, all day, for absolutely everything.

I've used RightNote for three weeks about a year ago. I imported all my KN files and completely stopped using KN during that time. I was really hoping that I could make the switch, but in the end I went back to KeyNote.

My experience with RightNote is that it felt less snappy and responsive than KeyNote NF. I'm guessing it's because it uses some kind of skin engine for its whole interface (you can change the look of the interface), a feature that I'm really not a fan of (I much prefer when such a program integrates as seamlessly as possible with the OS). Switching between tabs in the same file took noticeably longer than in KeyNote and I could see the whole interface being redrawn. Even switching between nodes in a tree felt a bit sluggish compared to KN. I use keyboard shortcuts to navigate between nodes (alt + up/down arrow), and it was really obvious if I tried to run through a lot of nodes in order to reach the one I wanted: on several occasions, RightNote actually freezed and I had to kill and restart it. I have never had this kind of problem with KeyNote.

Functionality-wise, RN has everything KN has (as far as I can tell) and more. Most of my gripes are about the interface and user experience, but those are important aspects too and I wasn't able to overlook them. Should KeyNote become unusable one day, it's good to know that I could at least import my files to RightNote, but for now I haven't found the experience with RN to be satisfactory enough to justify the switch.

Not my experience at all. One of my files (all my FortiGate commands) is at least 100 notes, perhaps more, with multiple pages and formatting - never noticeably slow. I’m using default skin. Startup IS slow - perhaps 10 seconds, but I only do this once a day.

If RightNote supported link migration I’d have abandoned KeynoteNF, if only because image import has been broken since some Windows update a year or so ago.

My experience is just to opposite, RightNote works now much faster, or at least for me, the way I use it. Not that KeyNote is slow, but RightNote felt much faster.

It may be that I used latest version, so they solved whatever made it sluggish.

exactly what advantages would such a choice bring?
small, quick and fast are better! : )

I know rightnote, but not found very different or better than keynote, that also is free, and this mean that will work forever.
some software that I can suggest:
infoqube http://www.infoqube.biz/
a very complex software, born from a powerful pim software Ecco pro (that is also an alternative, even if is totally different from keynote)
and a free one: neomem. a tree organizer, very nice-looking is hosted here on github at

KeyNoteNF (Open Source) - https://github.com/dpradov/keynote-nf

  • I always look for reasons not to like it, but it's reliable for note taking. I just don't like how I can't use it to write novels or anything other than note taking. At the end of the day I simply wanted an AIO tool that was small and easy to use, but I was chasing a purple dragon that doesn't exist (yet?)...
  • Con: Spell check - don't really need spell check for pure note taking
  • Con: Images - some formats work, so convert it with mspaint
  • Tabbed and layered hierarchy. Single save file (.knt) + Virtual node to external RTF and Text
  • Application fast and responsive. Ram: 25MB.

Pandoc (Open Source)

  • Convert Text/Markdown/R <---> PDF/epub/doc/etc

Typora (Commercial, Trial)

  • Elegant markdown editor: I use the themes "Liquid" and "Purple" from their website, downloaded separately. Word count in bot right. Honestly, even if you don't use it for note taking, it's a GREAT markdown editor to have anyways.
  • CON: Since Nov 2021 it's beta ended and reached version 1.0+ and it's no longer freeware. I did end up buying a license, because it's that good and I want the company to continue to develop their software!
  • File directory hierarchy, views markdown (.md) and text files only. Has individual file outline (Control-Shift-1).
  • Supports Pandoc.
  • Application fast and responsive with regular usage. Large markdown files > 800kb will lag Typora. Ram: 240MB (350MB more with Liquid theme).

OneNote (Microsoft, "free")

  • If you want something for school or your tablet, this is the best bet, as it supports Ink. There are even plugins if you are looking for automation.
  • CON: Names can be confusing... There is "OneNote" and then there is "OneNote for Windows 10", you want the simple "OneNote".
  • The hierarchy has "section groups" if you require more depth or layers.
  • It supports collaboration and sharing.
  • Application fast and responsive. Ram: 187MB.

Manuskript (Open Source) - https://www.theologeek.ch/manuskript/

  • This is a writing tool I like for my novels. It's better than Sigil imho, not that Sigil doesn't have it's usage for publishing or checking an exported epub.
  • Fleshed out application written in Python, w/ a console-free launcher manuskriptw.exe
  • In addition to it's editor section where it can edit a directory of markdown files, it has a character, plot, world, and outline editor for keeping track of pertinent things.
  • Single save file (.msk a zip file, default) or flat file/directory saving, if you want version control or external editing. Text files are saved as Markdown (.md).
  • It obviously supports Pandoc.
  • Application fast and responsive. Ram: 88MB.

Xournal++ or xournalpp (Open Source) - https://github.com/xournalpp/xournalpp

  • It's best for tablet users who want to write quick notes by hand, not really for text notes. I like how you can open PDFs and draw right on top. Good for school to edit PDFs with highlighters and text boxes.
  • Export PDF, PNG, SVG.
  • Application fast and responsive. Ram: 40MB.

Edit: 10/28/2020
I have tried [QOwnNotes](https://www.qownnotes.org/) and it's a good new alternative, but it took me a few hours to get everything like how I like it. It's MarkDown (With html in the preview enabled). I personally like being able to use RTF like controls, but I could grow to accept this as when I need to use colors I can just type in the html code like < span style="color:red;" >Red text< /span >. I have been using it for a few days, unless I edit this comment again I'll probably continue to use it.
End edit

Kinda late to the opinions
My 2 cents on everything
TL;DR I will continue to use KNT-NF as I like to write stories and journal AIO in my note taking however I saw this issue as I have been thinking about switching for a few months now but still am not convinced to switch yet

Honorable mention: https://html-notepad.com/ is a better WYSIWYG than PageEdit from sigil for HTML file edit - purpose is notes/outline rather than web design

reasons I use KNT-NF (And will continue to)

  • good: easy to use and look-and-feel simple and informative with personalization
  • good: I like the virtual nodes that can be set to rtf / txt support to keep my note file (*.KNT) small in file size
  • good: Templates that look like a wiki entry, else I would make a note with the template and have to duplicate them
  • good: I like to use links to open external files
  • I have to manually create win-batch files for passing params for programs - other apps are the same so meh
  • no spell check but meh this is not a word processor
  • negative: not regularly updated
  • negative: no png or svg support, and I aint gona export my svg to emf/wmf - I had a long ramble here just know i export a thumbnail to bmp and use a normal link

RightNote

  • good: easy to use and look-and-feel good and allows personalization too
  • good: lots of trinkets and native file type support and different editors to differentiate code text and rtf
  • good: has tutorials and chm
  • good: It only loads data as it is needed - uses sqlite db so virtualization is not as important, recommended to keep db below 300mb according to chm
  • If you want an AIO commercial easy to use app this is THE only KNT-NF alternative
  • negative: takes a bit of clicking to make each virtual node else easy to import - note that there is a difference between rtf (requires the +--+--+ for tables) and rvf (table support/hl)
  • negative: I feel like this is resource intensive on ram/disk compared to lite alternatives
  • negative: free version is sad, runAsDate32 for trial is better and you can set MIME file association with a batch script

Cherrytree

  • good: simple and lite
  • good: multiple instances feels natural for different note books
  • spell check
  • negative: does not load RTF but does have other imports

Trilium Notes

  • good: built-in diagrams with relations and attributes which SAVE TIME compared to Dia or other SVG diagram programs
  • good: built-in revision history and easy MD import (markdown)
  • good: has a server edition that allows remote viewing/editing (limited new note feature) through webpage even on tablet/phone
  • good: great journal features and ease of use for that purpose
  • has interesting features and the html/js viewer feels like it is the core feature of the app
  • this app feels closer to sigil that is a epub editor than a note taking program though
  • negative: does not feel like a note taking program, might as well use keep.google.com on my phone

InfoQube

  • good: SVG feels good
  • good: did not try out the handwritting feature
  • good: can sync with calendar and tasks like a mini-lightning from thunderbird/sunbird
  • tried it out and it feels like a trilium with more programmer like features and theme/look-and-feel
  • This feel like it is tailored for working with access/excell or any SQL server and outlook
  • negative: not RTF

NeoMem

  • good: Slim
  • negative: KeepNote look alike
  • negative: did not actually try it

KeepNote

  • good: Simple and what I would expect from a note taking program
  • Cherrytree is BETTER
  • I used to use KeepNote but migrated to KeyNote then KeyNote-NF

OTHERS

Sigil

  • epub editor (version before 0.9.12 that has built-in WYSIWYG HTML editor w/o external tools)
  • I used to use a CHM maker (long ago when XP existed) before I switched to sigil for note taking (haven't used sigil for raw note taking in years)

Other Simple Note Programs i have tried in the last few months

  • NoteCase (did not like)
  • wiki software with wamp / xampp like pmwiki mediawiki or similiar CMS etc
  • Zim desktop wiki portable

Every now and then I come across a new note-taking app that I compare with KeyNote just out of curiosity (not because I dislike KeyNote), and over the past 10+ years there has only been one application that has been able to beat KeyNote's combination of portability, small size, low memory consumption, speed, and features: KeyNote-NF :). There is something magical about old-school Delphi applications that has been lost with modern software.

Here is something quite similar. It works on Android and Windows and you can manually sync them - there's no online account needed at all - all manual. It gives you only one tree, but after that you get all the notes you want. It works. It syncs, too. It doesn't have the million features of KeyNote, though (I use TreeDBNotes now - I used to use KeyNote long ago).

You have no idea how excited this update makes me, (btw no rush, and thanks for all your work.) I've been using your software for well over a decade, and always come back to it / find there's nothing better.

Also, doesn't that mean that KeynoteNF would now run on Linux? / be natively multi platform! This is huge! Also, this software is the #1 reason I switched from Linux back to Windows after using Linux for over a full year.

Great news indeed. I've been through all alternatives and every new tree-editor that comes up - nothing compares to Keynote. Btw, big thanks to skaviouz for the nice compilation of similar programs.

Keynote is still unparalleled imo, in terms of portability, speed, ease of use, the many customizing options.

I'd also be willing to donate to keep this project alive.

image Do you have a preferred donate/tipping link? I'd really love to send something as a thank you for all the value I've gotten from it over the years.

:) First, I'm going to get the new version ready. Then, we'll see. But thank you very much for the offer, sincerely.

Also, doesn't that mean that KeynoteNF would now run on Linux? / be natively multi platform! This is huge! Also, this software is the #1 reason I switched from Linux back to Windows after using Linux for over a full year.

To achieve this I would have to make many changes to the application. You should keep in mind that there are many dependencies with the Windows API. But I'll have to see it.
At the moment I myself (who have been an intensive user of KeyNote NF from day one, in my work and at home), have been wanting to incorporate many improvements, and the fact that the application was developed in such an old version has been an impediment. Also, the fact that the code needs a major refactoring to be able to advance and improve it. In my day to day, in my work, I develop on the .NET platform, and there I am very productive, but with Delphi and the way the code is, I progress very slowly. But you also get a very light and powerful product with Delphi (and KeyNote is in Delphi and so there are a lot of working code...). That's why the first thing was to move to a current version of Delphi, carry out a series of refactorings and from there begin to apply corrections and improvements more easily.

For more than 5 years I have a development quite advanced to include improvements in image management that I have been postponing. My intention is to incorporate it, along with other changes.
But mainly my intention is to have a cleaner and more reusable code with which to apply a series of more important changes. They would be impossible for me with the current architecture of the application. Among the changes I want to do is to make KNT rely on one or more SQLite files, so that each time it is saved it doesn't save the entire file.
And not having to decide to open different files (because having everything in just one right now is not recommended), but simply working from the same instance of the application. Making use of one or more files (SQLite in principle, but I don't rule out making it compatible with other DBs), would be a matter of configuration that should not affect operation.
I want to incorporate proper metadata management and another series of improvements that I myself miss in my day to day. Of course, any of these changes at no time can imply a reduction in the response times of KNT. I'm very picky about that and I wouldn't admit it. It has to remain fast and light.
From the moment it goes on to incorporate those major changes, it will no longer be called "KeyNote NF". It will have another name, which I will indicate later (something like "*** knt"). It will be a new project on GitHub and of course it will remain open source.
I would incorporate only corrections to "KeyNote NF", or small improvements, but the most important improvements would be on the new application.

That is my intention.

Maybe you can have a poll to help decide on the name for your next-gen application :D. I can take the first crack at it: since you'll be integrating SQLite, and it is considered a spiritual sequel to KeyNote NF, the name of your next application can be SequelNote or Sequel Notes 😁

Hola Daniel.

Hello again,
For those of you who are interested in testing the new version of KeyNote NF (1.8.0 Beta 1) I attach in this thread a file with the binaries. For now I don't want to upload the beta to the 'Releases' area, so as not to make the Beta 'official' until I confirm that it is stable enough.

Although I have done many tests, do not forget that it is always very important to make backup copies and that you keep one with the last modification of your files prior to using this new version.

A summary of the main changes is in 'history.txt' and more detail in 'Changes in 1.8.0 Beta1.txt'

Do not stop looking, inside the second file, what I point out under 'IMPORTANT' in "New KNT Links, linked to markers, not only to caret position"

Please, comment here any problem you detect relative to the changes of this new version.

After some others Beta versions I want to end up releasing an installer. I will also try to update the help of the program...

Thanks

Thanks a ton. It was a pleasure to read over the many improvements and fixes.

However, after trying out the improved Search-function, this is what I get:

  1. The small font size is still hard to read. It applies to the whole sidebar, including Templates, Macros, Favorites etc.
All other font sizes can be cranked up and customized, but the sidebar remains tiny. It makes Keynote hard to use on today's HD monitors.

  2. Search results are not easy do decipher. Don't know what to make of it:

with right click on a result located in a different node, insert a link to that result.

Upon right-clicking (not doing anything else yet, no insert-action), the act of right-clicking jumps to the correct node and highlights the correct match (value). I tried right-clicking on all results, one by one, it always jumps to the correct spot.

When I now left-click on the results OF THE SAME NODE, it also works correctly. Whereas left-clicking on a result of any other node does not select the correct match. Not even with the first node, that used to work before.

If I left-click on the result of another node — producing a fail for that match — and now right-click on other results of the same node, it still does not work. To make it work again, I have to right-click on the result of another node first.

To actually click on "insert" does not seem to make much sense, since I would only insert a link to the exact spot that got correctly highlighted, replacing the letters "value" that now are correctly highlighted.

To actually click on "insert" does not seem to make much sense, since I would only insert a link to the exact spot that got correctly highlighted, replacing the letters "value" that now are correctly highlighted.

But that is because of the current behaviour of the program in your laptop. Think that in my case I could be located in node "A" and I could want to insert there a link to a result targetting node "B" (or insert all results) , because when I right-click in a result, it will not change the currently located node.

With all that information I think that it will not be difficult to find a solution. I will try to find time during next week to resolve it and generate a new release.

Thank you for all your tests, they have been very helpful

That's what I figured. I did not mean to say that it makes no sense in general, just to provide an explanation why I did not follow through completely and triggered the actual insert.

Thank you for all your tests, they have been very helpful

You are welcome. I am so glad that development is being continued, and that you really seem to care about the program. I am a very heavy user of Keynote, with dozens of knt-files, some of them really large. If there is anything else I can provide, just let me know.

See problem described here: #602 (comment)

This problem was specific of version 1.8.0 of KeyNote. In previous versions the results of 'Find All'
were not shown in a RichEdit control. From 1.8.0 it is used to offer excerpts that show a context for
 each coincidence.

It is a bug in RichEdit v4, but the new solution will work ok in that old version and current ones.

Hello
I have a new version, 1.8.0 Beta 5. This time with just a few changes. One is the solution (I hope) of the problem of using 'Find All' in systems with old RichEdit versions (like RichEdit v4 in W7).

You have Information in history.txt and "Changes in 1.8.0 Beta5.txt"

Changes are, this time:

  • Fixed: Selection of search result (from "Find All") was not working in RichEdit <=4
  • Improved click options on hyperlinks (you can use rigth-click, and also have a new option, for Ctrl+Click)
  • Added numbering to serch results

Eureka! You did it. Search results work like a charm now. Ran a few tests in large files with many notes, and I just love it. Thanks for including the numbering, very well done, the typesetting clearly sets it apart to avoid confusion, and yet it is not obtrusive at all.

This is a dream come true. Especially that it works across Windows and RichEdit versions without having to adapt a single setting. Just like that, out of the box.

I also like what you did to Hyperlinks. Their handling had always been tricky. Not anymore. The dialog that pops up on right-clicking them leaves nothing to wish for. Simply perfect. Same for the customizable Ctrl+Click behavior in Options > Actions.

Two thumbs up for the best Keynote ever!

Should happen rarely, but in those cases it generated an unhandled exception. For this reason I thought it was appropriate to try to correct it and include it as a new version. My goal is to have a version stable enough to be able to offer it as a recommended version on the KeyNote home page. After that, I will focus, more calmly, on another series of improvements, the first of which (not because it is the one I personally need the most, but because I understand that it is highly demanded and convenient) will be the revision of the image processing in KeyNote.

The only improvement that I have included in this version is a suggestion from @Stefanoko, which I finally found interesting and relatively easy to implement. And I always like to incorporate something new in each version I upload.

  • Fixed: An exception "Cannot open clipboard: Access Denied" could occasionally be raised
  • Fixed: Error loading Glossary list ( .exp)
  • New: View | Alternative Margins

Daniel

Thanks a million for offering alternative margins. Easily switchable via the view menu. Great idea to put it there.

I am in 7th heaven now. This turns Keynote into a full-blown writing app with a distraction-free mode, aka ZEN-writing mode: Just turn off the tree and resource panel and activate alternative margins.

When set to large values, alternative margins provide ample white space left and right. The wide and open expanse fosters creativity. And it improves readability. Easier on the eyes, when text does not cling to the borders. More like real paper or a word processor, great for proofreading.

I use Autohotkey to switch Keynote into "Zen-mode" by triggering a sequence of shortcuts. It requires all toggles being either on or off. Therefore, it were great if View|Alternative Margins could be remembered between calls. That would be the icing on the cake.

Thank you for implementing this new feature sooner than I expected.

@dpradov ,

Just an FYI.

I just tested beta 6 on the two functions I'd had trouble with in the past, proper rtf display and pasting from a browser, and both are working fine.

It also opened at a perfectly normal speed.

You should know however, that when trying to open with the -debug4 argument, I got an error message instead of opening.

Thanks.
DS.

Thanks for communicating it

It is normal. That parameter is only valid in executables that I generate as debug, with log enabled.

Hello,
I have just include the last beta (1.8.0 Beta 6) as the new recommended release in KeyNote NF:

https://github.com/dpradov/keynote-nf/releases/tag/v1.8.0-Beta.6

In the files added (history.txt and Changes in 1.8.0 Beta1-6.txt) I have unified the changes from the different beta versions, removing the references to fixes of problems/bugs specific to this new version, that it is not useful to anyone coming from a previous version (1.7.9 or older)

In the Release I have included some notes regarding the use of images (bmp, gif, png, jpg, tiff) that could be of your interest.
I have also updated the file "Comments on KNT file formats.txt", adding as a reference the difference in size when pasting images from clipboard versus dragging from a file.

Regards
Daniel

Hello
Very soon I will upload a new version with important improvements related to image management. I'll upload it here first so you can try it. It is a very long development and there are many functionalities that I have had to review and adjust, but I have very little left to have it available.

Daniel
