preferences under options will not save

Under options I have had the themes cycle every 1 minute for many years. With the last FF update my preferences are wiped out (empty) even though I tried to fix the non rotation by clicking the save button once I exit the options menu. I can only manually choose a theme from the tools icon--and there it sits until I manually change the theme.
