Maybe it's because I'm not quite familiar with working with Github gists, but when I try to follow the instructions I end up with a "error: not found" message when trying to upload my bookmarks.

It's pretty clear what token to register (and I figured out for myself I'd probably have to tick the option that the token would be for creating gists when I created it).

Creating a new gist was already a bit less evident: creating an empty one isn't possible and BookmarkHub gives no instructions on what file you should create in the gist, with what content.
Obtaining the gist ID is also unclear: I went with the URL that shows up in the list of my gists.

I kept the gist file name unchanged, and when I got the first "not found" error I renamed the ReadMe.md file I had created in my gist to "BookmarkHub", but that didn't solve the error.

Browser is Waterfox G3, so a rebranded version of Firefox 78 ESR. For now it still works with the standard Firefox sync so I would assume that BookmarkHub should work too.

Nothing shows up in the browser console.

@RJVB
here's a problem same as your,

It could be because of the token without permission.

Sorry, I should have updated this ticket sooner.

In my case the problem turned out to be that I gave the full URL to the gist, which seemed to make sense because there is no way to know that either the GH token or the gist ID (or both) already contain identifying information about the GH account (user name). Once I removed all but the hexadecimal sausage the extension started working fine

Downloading bookmarks and merging them is incredibly slow in Firefox but I guess that is to be expected if you have as many bookmarks as I have.
