Would it be possible to use enhance the firmware to function as a multimeter, without providing power? I am not sure, whether the hardware is capable of it, or whether it can only measure the voltage while it is providing power. This would be helpful e.g. for measuring the voltage of batteries before charging them.

Yes, it is possible, that is already proposed in #89
