Describe the feature:

As a user of synthetic monitors, I'd like to:

  • Save a particular throttling configuration as a network profile
  • Reuse existing network profiles across monitors
  • Have default configurations to easily simulate 3G, 4G etc
  • Have my monitors adhere to the new network profile if I update it

Describe a specific use case for the feature:

Currently, users have to manually input download, upload, and latency values individually for each monitor configuration. If users have a wide variety of monitors which require the same configuration, they'll have to manually set it multiple times. Furthermore, they need to research what are common settings to simulate 3G, 4G, etc.

After this feature, users would be able to easily select a network profile to apply, and changing the network profile would cause all monitors which use it to adhere to the new configuration. That workflow would be much quicker and convenient.

I also assume most users will want to use the default 3G, 4G etc network profiles, so having those ready there would be very convenient.

Sounds amazing, thanks for raising it.

@drewpost just to clarify, you'll be incorporating this (and device type emulation, such as iPhone) into the Synthetics App feature requirements?

I think we shouldn't wait for Synthetics app for basic features like these, if we build this component, most probably we will end up reusing it in new app. So waiting doesn't makes sense.

@paulb-elastic Yes, it will be in the new synthetics app

@shahzad31 It's less the feature toggle itself, it's more the numerous places in the UI we need to account for it. We have much higher priorities at the moment
