 src/sysdep.c (str_collate) [__STDC_ISO_10646__]: Improve the
 wording of the error messages.
 (str_collate) [WINDOWSNT]: Signal an error if w32_compare_strings
 sets errno.
 src/w32proc.c (get_lcid_callback): Accept locale specifications
 without the country part, as in "enu" vs "enu_USA".
 (w32_compare_strings): Signal an error if a locale was specified,
 but couldn't be translated into a valid LCID.
One can't hoist this out of the 'if', because intervening calls to
newlocale, twolower, etc. can change errno.
It's not safe to call qsort or qsort_r, since they have undefined
behavior if the user-specified predicate is not a total order.
Also, watch out for garbage-collection while sorting vectors.
* admin/merge-gnulib (GNULIB_MODULES): Add vla.
* configure.ac (qsort_r): Remove, as we no longer use qsort-like
functions.
* lib/gnulib.mk, m4/gnulib-comp.m4: Regenerate.
* lib/vla.h, m4/vararrays.m4: New files, copied from gnulib.
* lib/stdlib.in.h, m4/stdlib_h.m4: Sync from gnulib, incorporating:
2014-08-29 qsort_r: new module, for GNU-style qsort_r
The previous two files' changes are boilerplate generated by
admin/merge-gnulib, and should not affect Emacs.
* src/fns.c: Include <vla.h>.
(sort_vector_predicate) [!HAVE_QSORT_R]: Remove.
(sort_vector_compare): Remove, replacing with ....
(inorder, merge_vectors, sort_vector_inplace, sort_vector_copy):
... these new functions.
(sort_vector): Rewrite to use the new functions.
GCPRO locals, since the predicate can invoke the GC.
Since it's in-place return void; caller changed.
(merge): Use 'inorder', for clarity.
Needed on AIX when 'configure' infers MAKE=gmake.
* src/gmalloc.c: Don't include <stdlib.h>.  Declare system malloc and
friends before defining hybrid_malloc and friends if HYBRID_MALLOC
is defined.  (Bug#18368)
 src/xdisp.c (get_glyph_string_clip_rects): Don't let the width of a
 clipping rectangle become negative (i.e. large positive, since
 it's an unsigned data type). This can happen in R2L hscrolled
 glyph rows, and caused us to draw the cursor glyph on the fringe.
 For the details, see
 http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-devel/2014-08/msg00543.html.
 src/xdisp.c (display_and_set_cursor): Call erase_phys_cursor also
 when HPOS is negative, for the benefit of R2L glyph rows whose
 newline overflows into the fringe.
* lisp/ibuffer.el: Replace mode-specific quit function with
`quit-window' via `special-mode'.
(ibuffer-mode-map): Use keybindings from special-mode-map instead
of local overrides.
(ibuffer): Don't store previous windows configuration. Let
`quit-window' handle restoring.
(ibuffer-quit): Remove function. Use `quit-window' instead.
(ibuffer-restore-window-config-on-quit): Remove variable.
(ibuffer-prev-window-config): Remove variable.
All uses replaced by strchr and strrchr, which are on all
target platforms now.
* configure.ac (WERROR_CFLAGS): Don't disable -Wnested-externs.
While we're at it, don't disable -Wlogical-op either.
* src/bytecode.c: Include blockinput.h and keyboard.h rather
than rolling their APIs by hand.
* src/emacs.c: Include regex.h and rely on its and lisp.h's API
rather than rolling them by hand.
* src/lastfile.c: Include lisp.h, to check this file's API.
* src/lisp.h (lisp_eval_depth, my_edata, my_endbss, my_endbss_static):
New decls.
* src/regex.h (re_max_failures): New decl.
* src/unexcw.c, src/unexmacosx.c, src/unexw32.c:
Rely on lisp.h's API rather than rolling it by hand.
* src/vm-limit.c (__after_morecore_hook, __morecore, real_morecore):
Declare at top level, to pacify GCC -Wnested-externs.
* INSTALL, etc/NEWS: Document this.
* lib-src/Makefile.in (AM_DEFAULT_VERBOSITY, AM_V_CC, am__v_CC_)
(am__v_CC_0, am__v_CC_1, AM_V_CCLD, am__v_CCLD_, am__v_CCLD_0)

(am__v_CC_0, am__v_CC_1): New macros, taken from Automake.
(.c.o): Use them.
* oldXMenu/Makefile.in (AM_DEFAULT_VERBOSITY, AM_V_CC, am__v_CC_)
(am__v_CC_0, am__v_CC_1): New macros, taken from Automake.
(.c.o): Use them.

 lisp/ls-lisp.el (ls-lisp-use-string-collate)
 (ls-lisp-UCA-like-collation): New defcustoms.
 (ls-lisp-string-lessp): Use them to control sorting by file
 names.

 etc/NEWS: Mention that ls-lisp uses string-collate-lessp.
 lisp/ls-lisp.el (ls-lisp-version-lessp): New function.
 (ls-lisp-handle-switches): Use it to implement the -v switch of GNU ls.
 (ls-lisp--insert-directory): Mention the -v switch in the doc string.
* fileio.c (Fexpand_file_name): Avoid calls to strlen if
the length of 'newdir' is known or may be precalculated.
(file_accessible_directory_p): Prefer to pass Lisp_Object,
not 'char *', and so use precalculated length.
(Ffile_accessible_directory_p):
* callproc.c (encode_current_directory, init_callproc):
* charset.c (init_charset):
* lread.c (load_path_check, load_path_default): Adjust users.

* test/automated/python-tests.el:
(python-indent-electric-colon-1): New test.  (Bug#18228)

Use USE_LOCAL_ALLOCA only if USE_TOOLKIT_SCROLL_BARS,
to pacify --enable-gcc-warnings in non-scrollbar builds.
Do not match file names that end in '/', as they cannot be 'grep'
hits nowadays. This prevents confusion when 'grep -r' reports a
match in a file whose basename is ':12345:'. Conversely, do not
require exactly the same sequence of spaces and tabs after both
colons, and allow spaces or tabs before the second colon, as per
the POSIX spec for 'grep' output.
* lisp/emacs-lisp/eldoc.el (global-eldoc-mode): New minor mode.

    * losp/progmodes/verilog-mode.el: Fix some non-automated indent
    issues and comments, bug943. (verilog-type-font-keywords): Cycle
    delay operators like ##1 and ##[0:$] are now highlighted in their
    entirety similarly to the # delay-control operator. Likewise, the
    followed-by operators #-# and #=# are no longer partially

    verilog-skip-backward-comments): Minor performance improvements to
    buffer traversal functions for reduced latency. (verilog-calc-1,
    verilog-in-deferred-immediate-final-p): When the keyword 'final'
    follows 'assert/assume/cover', then it is part of a deferred
    immediate assertion item and should not be treated as a final
    construct for indentation. Reported by Yuri Sugihara.
    (verilog-do-indent): Virtual task/function/class definition lines
    should not be considered as declarations. Reported by Enzo Chi.
    (verilog-do-indent): Do not falsely indent to '=' of
    property/sequence operators on subsequent lines of a multi-line
    statement.  (verilog-assignment-operator-re): Fix '!==' operator
    and add support for '<->', ':/', '#-#', and '#=#' operators.
    (verilog-calculate-indent, verilog-label-be): Enable
    case-sensitive regular expression parsing when looking for
    keywords. (verilog-calc-1): Detect 'pure virtual method'
    declarations which exist in abstract classes. Reported by Enzo
    Chi and Kaushal Modi. (verilog-backward-ws&directives): When
    moving back to the start of a line and the preceeding line ended
    with an escaped-newline, then jump up one line. This properly
    consumes a multi-line pre-processor directive.  Reported by
    Kaushal Modi.  (verilog-dpi-import-export-re,
    verilog-extended-complete-re, verilog-calc-1): Teach verilog-mode
    to properly indent after a DPI import/export statement that
    resides outside of a module. Reported by Kaushal Modi.
    (verilog-extended-complete-re): Update regexp to match both
    "DPI-C" and "DPI". Reported by Kaushal Modi.

@CawCaw This patch is absolutely massive, for me to even consider migrating it into Emacs manually, it would need to only address the proposed change.

The print-symbols-as-references processing for comma and related
symbols works fine if they're being printed out as normal symbols.
It's only in the special ",foo" style syntax where using "#N=" is
likely to break things, because "#1=,foo" reads back as setting #1# to
,foo rather than to just the comma symbol.

* src/print.c (print_object): When printing "," or related symbols
with special syntax, don't use print_object on the special symbol
itself.
(PRINT_CIRCLE_CANDIDATE_P): Revert previous change.

This fixes some infinite loops that cannot be quitted out of,
e.g., (defun foo () (nth most-positive-fixnum '#1=(1 . #1#)))
when byte-compiled and when run under X. See:
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-devel/2017-01/msg00577.html
This also attempts to keep the performance improvements I recently
added, as much as possible under the constraint that the infloops
must be caught. In some cases this fixes infloop bugs recently
introduced when I removed immediate_quit.
* src/alloc.c (Fmake_list):
Use rarely_quit, not maybe_quit, for speed in the usual case.
* src/bytecode.c (exec_byte_code):
* src/editfns.c (Fcompare_buffer_substrings):
* src/fns.c (Fnthcdr):
* src/syntax.c (scan_words, skip_chars, skip_syntaxes)
(Fbackward_prefix_chars):
Use rarely_quit so that users can C-g out of long loops.
* src/callproc.c (call_process_cleanup, call_process):
* src/fileio.c (read_non_regular, Finsert_file_contents):
* src/indent.c (compute_motion):
* src/syntax.c (scan_words, Fforward_comment):
Remove now-unnecessary maybe_quit calls.
* src/callproc.c (call_process):
* src/doc.c (get_doc_string, Fsnarf_documentation):
* src/fileio.c (Fcopy_file, read_non_regular, Finsert_file_contents):
* src/lread.c (safe_to_load_version):
* src/sysdep.c (system_process_attributes) [GNU_LINUX]:
Use emacs_read_quit instead of emacs_read in places where
C-g handling is safe.
* src/eval.c (maybe_quit): Move comment here from lisp.h.
* src/fileio.c (Fcopy_file, e_write):
Use emacs_write_quit instead of emacs_write_sig in places where
C-g handling is safe.
* src/filelock.c (create_lock_file): Use emacs_write, not
plain write, as emacs_write no longer has a problem.
(read_lock_data): Use emacs_read, not read, as emacs_read
no longer has a problem.
* src/fns.c (rarely_quit): Move to lisp.h and rename to
incr_rarely_quit.  All uses changed..
* src/fns.c (Fmemq, Fmemql, Fassq, Frassq, Fplist_put, Fplist_member):
* src/indent.c (compute_motion):
* src/syntax.c (find_defun_start, back_comment, forw_comment)
(Fforward_comment, scan_lists, scan_sexps_forward):
Use incr_rarely_quit so that users can C-g out of long loops.
* src/fns.c (Fnconc): Move incr_rarely_quit call to within
inner loop, so that it catches C-g there too.
* src/keyboard.c (tty_read_avail_input): Remove commented-out
and now-obsolete code dealing with interrupts.
* src/lisp.h (rarely_quit, incr_rarely_quit): New functions,
the latter moved here from fns.c and renamed from rarely_quit.
(emacs_read_quit, emacs_write_quit): New decls.
* src/search.c (find_newline, search_buffer, find_newline1):
Add maybe_quit to catch C-g.
* src/sysdep.c (get_child_status): Always invoke maybe_quit
if interruptible, so that the caller need not bother.
(emacs_nointr_read, emacs_read_quit, emacs_write_quit):
New functions.
(emacs_read): Rewrite in terms of emacs_nointr_read.
Do not handle C-g or signals; that is now for emacs_read_quit.
(emacs_full_write): Replace PROCESS_SIGNALS two-way arg
with INTERRUPTIBLE three-way arg. All uses changed.

Given the change, this should probably be closed for cleanliness.

It's unfortunate we can't leverage .github templates to tell folks not to open PRs against this repo (or at least that they will be ignored).

* src/casefiddle.c (syms_of_casefiddle): Declare four new symbols:
Qtitlecase, Qspecial_uppercase, Qspecial_lowercase and
Qspecial_titlecase.
(prepare_casing_context): Use aforementioned symbols.

* lisp/ses.el (ses-sym-rowcol): Check that the renamed cell
hashmap has been instantiated before getting data from it. When
editing several spreadsheets, and you have spreadsheet #1 with a
cell named `foo', and no renamed cell in spreadsheet #2, then if
you make a formula with `foo' in spreadsheet #2, not doing this
check will make an error.
(ses-cell-set-formula): Robustify versus incorrect cell references
given in the user provided formula. An explicit error message is
provided after the action when the user gives an incorrect cell
reference, but the formula edition is not changed. This means that
if the incorrect reference is to a cell that is created someday,
then this new cell will not have the edited cell in its reference
list. Fixing this can still be done by editing again the first
cell formula.
(ses-relocate-symbol): Do not create symbol of referred-to cell
when this is a renamed cell.

Parsing symbol names involves processing for possible multibyte
characters and comparisons against other symbol-name strings in the
obarray. The #N# syntax is simpler, uses an automatically resized
hash table keyed by integers, and is in most cases shorter, so reading
can be a little faster.

When doing this we have to avoid the special "," syntax because we
would wind up printing "#1=,foo" which reads back as setting #1# to
,foo when we really wanted to set #1# to just the comma symbol.

* src/print.c (syms_of_print): Define new Lisp variable
print-symbols-as-references.
(PRINT_CIRCLE_CANDIDATE_P): If it's set, accept interned symbols.
(print_preprocess): Update comment.
(print_object): When printing "," or related symbols with special
syntax, don't use print_object on the special symbol itself.
* lisp/loadup.el: Bind print-symbols-as-references to t while creating
the dumped.elc file.

Make sure that the value added to the `read_objects_completed` set is
the one we actually return; previously this wasn't the case for conses
because of an optimisation (bug#54501).

Also add a check for vacuous self-references such as #1=#1# instead of
returning a nonsense value from thin air.

* src/lread.c (read1): Treat numbered conses correctly as described
above.  Detect vacuous self-references.
* test/src/lread-tests.el (lread-test-read-and-print)
(lread-test-circle-cases, lread-circle): Add tests.
