Considering there are FTL comms across the hyperspace network via hyperspace communications relays, I always figured it was as simple as an automated distress message sent via hyperspace comms to Republic command or whoever the governing authority is for the government you attacked. Something along the lines of: As soon as you attack a ship, that distress message gets sent to everyone in the system. If you destroy the ship, another automated message, possibly with a black box recording, gets sent back to command. Hence, they, and every other ship of that government on the hyperspace comms network, know you're responsible for destroying one of their ships and can respond accordingly. This doesn't resolve the question, "Well, why does the government still get angry if you destroy them when they aren't connected to the hyperspace network and there is no one else around?" but we can probably handwave that away for gameplay purposes. |

It's an automated distress system that uses hyperspace communications, and because each ship is equipped with an ID transponder, the powers that be instantly know the status their ships. The same system is able to detect the attackers ID using various unnamed scanners. This is why the player also knows the ID of the ships they target. I do like the ideas for some missions. Sabotage and hunting down saboteurs is always fun. |

I was wondering about how the faction reputation system might fit in with lore (How does the Republic know that you blew up one of their ships if no one was there to watch it?). I came up with an idea that could prove interesting.
What if the current factions used some sort of automated camera marking system? If you attack a faction ship, cameras situated around the faction ships can find the attacking ship (or ships), find its owner (possibly through some sort of ID system similar to car license plates), and 'mark' it as an enemy.
A side (or main) quest could be made to assist the Free Worlds-the Free Worlds would also use this system, but because of the FW being so new, their marker systems are not nearly as secure as the Republic or other factions. During or after the Republic/FW war, a group of people sabotage the FW marker system, so that they attack their own allies (or let enemy ships infiltrate their region of space). Through a series of missions, you find the saboteurs and bring them back to the Free Worlds Senate to be imprisoned.
Overall, the camera marker system provides a 'lore reason' for the faction reputation system, and can possibly provide some interesting content if used.
