This is just my speculations, but it's most likely related to what explodes AFTER the egg was killed.
Evidence: Works with the human structures too; if you leave a base unattended without a reactor for 90 seconds (default self-destruct time) they explode, right?
As for aliens, the reason why it happens the moment the egg is killed because it kills off the creep immediately for the other structures.
