Description

The Taxonomy Working Group should evaluate the FinOps FOCUS project to determine synergices with Common Cloud Controls as discussed during #25 (comment)

The FOCUS resources provided by @udam-f2 are below ...

FOCUS Resources

FOCUS stands for FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification - which aims to normalize cost and usage data across cloud, Saas and other areas (licensing, internal cloud, labor etc.) from a cost and usage data perspective. FOCUS is an open-source project under the Linux Foundation (similar to CCC). We have a v1.0 planned for Mid November 2023.

Added the following comment to Naseer's point in #48

"Very much interested in adding that next level detail into FOCUS for billing purposes. For the initial version of FOCUS, we started with the highest level categorization but the need for next level was definitely discussed and on the radar. We're open to go out and define it in FOCUS OR refer to an external mapping is up for discussion. Is there a desire to maintain both ServiceCategory and whatever the subcategory name as a part of CCC?

One challenge I can see is that FOCUS intends to go broadly into IT expenditure - e.g. on-premise costs, license, labor etc. in addition to the Cloud and SaaS cost. So it would be hard for us to adopt something external that doesn't capture the categories broadly. Open to ideas."

Went through the FOCUS Service Category list. When adapting this for FINOS CCC, I feel like Management and Governance covers too many things that we should identify separately. For me it makes sense to add a category for Logging & Monitoring and another category for Auditing. I also don't see a reason for FINOS CCC to have a category such as Developer Tools. I also feel like we need sub categories for each category and would be great if we can do it within FINOS CCC instead of having it defined in FOCUS because I suspect there may be slight differences in some categories.

Hi, I am Steven Shiells from Scott Logic and I recently joined the project. I have been working with @smendis-scottlogic to help get me up to speed. I have some spare time and would be keen to help out where I can.

I was in the working group meeting yesterday (Oct 26th) and noted that there was plans of a smaller group getting together to work through the next few controls.

Could I be involved in that meeting if possible so I can get a better idea of what the group is looking for?

Looks like the links from project FOCUS has changed. Please use following links as the links in the description are broken.

Hi @smendis-scottlogic @sshiells-scottlogic @udam-f2 @mark-rushing - Hi All, we discussed this issue in todays working group. On the call the belief was that this had been discussed previously and their was agreement that CCC would not look to tie itself to a higher level taxonomy e.g. Focus. Do you have a view on this? If you think we need to have short working call to discuss and I get one setup. Many thanks Adrian

@crawfordchanel Hi Chanel, I looked into FOCUS top level taxonomy and absorbed what was important to our top level taxonomy. I think we can close this ticket if others do not have any objections
