# Autobrake and Gear Indications

---

[Back to Flight Deck](../index.md){ .md-button }

---

![Autobrake and gear indicators, Brake Fan and A/SKID](../../../assets/a32nx-briefing/front/Autobrake-gear.jpg "Autobrake and gear indicators, Brake Fan and A/SKID")

## Description

The Airbus A320neo has three landing gears. Two main gears retracting inward and one nose gear retracting forward.

Two Landing Gear Control and Interface Units (LGCIUs) manage the extension and retraction of the gear and the operation of the doors. They also supply information to the ECAM for display, and send signals indicating whether the aircraft is in flight or on the ground to other aircraft systems.

The nose gear is also used for steering on the ground.

The main wheels have carbon multidisc brakes, which can be actuated by either of two independent brake systems.
The normal system uses green hydraulic pressure, whereas the alternate system uses the yellow hydraulic system backed up by the hydraulic accumulator.

An anti-skid and autobrake system is also provided.

## Usage

### Landing Gear Indicator Panel

- UNLK:
- Illuminate red if the gear is not locked in the selected position.
- Green Triangle:
- Illuminate green if the gear is locked down.

### L/G LEVER

- UP:
- Selects landing gear retraction.
- The brake system brakes the wheels of the main gear and a brake band in the nose gear well brakes the nose gear wheels.
- DOWN:
- Selects landing gear extension.
- The gear cannot be retracted while the aircraft is on the ground.

### RED ARROW

Lights up if the landing gear is not locked down when the aircraft is in the landing configuration, and a red warning appears on ECAM.

!!! attention ""
Currently not available or INOP in the FBW A32NX for Microsoft Flight Simulator.

### A/SKID & N/W STRG

The anti-skid system is the aircraft's equivalent to modern car's ABS system. It produces maximum braking efficiency by maintaining the wheels just short of an impending skid by releasing brake forces when on the verge of locking. ECAM displays the released brakes in this case.

The anti-skid is deactivated when ground speed is less than 20 knots.

- ON:
- Available green hydraulic system pressure, then Anti-skid and Nose Wheel Steering is available.
- Lost green hydraulic pressure:
- then the Yellow hydraulic system pressure takes over automatically to supply the brakes:
- Anti-skid remains available, while Nose wheel steering is lost.
- The triple indicator shows yellow system brake pressure.
- OFF:
- Yellow hydraulic system supplies brake pressure.
- Anti-skid is deactivated and pilot must limit brake pressure to avoid locking a wheel with the help of the triple indicator.
- Nose wheel steering is lost.
- Differential braking still available through the pedals.
- The triple indicator shows yellow system brake pressure.

### AUTO/BRK

The A320neo has an autobrake system which activates either in case of an aborted takeoff or after landing and maintains a selected deceleration rate. This improves comfort of passengers and reduces load from the flight crew.

It has 4 settings: OFF, LO, MED and MAX.

- MAX (takeoff):
- If the flight crew aborts the takeoff, maximum pressure goes to the brakes when the ground spoilers are being deployed.
- LO
- Usually selected for landing on a normal-length, dry and uncontaminated runway.
- Sends progressive pressure to the brakes 4 seconds after the ground spoilers deploy. Decelerates the aircraft at 1.7 meters/second^2^ (5.6 feet/second^2^ ).
- MED
- Usually selected for landing on a shorter, wet or contaminated runway.
- Sends progressive pressure to the brakes 2 seconds after the ground spoilers deploy in order to decelerate the aircraft at 3 meters/second^2^ (9.8 feet/second^2^).
- Lights
- Blue ON light indicates positive arming.
- Green DECEL light indicates deceleration is 80% of the selected rate.
- Note: DECEL light will not illuminate if the predetermined deceleration is not reached due to antiskid operation on a contaminated (slippery) runway. This does not mean that autobrake is not working.
- Off:
- Not active.

### BRK FAN

- ON:
- If the left-hand main landing gear is down and locked the fans run.
- OFF:
- Brake fans are stopped.
- HOT Lt:
- When the brakes get too hot, this amber light comes on and ECAM shows a caution.

# Clock

---

[Back to Flight Deck](../index.md){ .md-button }

---

![Clock](../../../assets/a32nx-briefing/front/Clock.jpg "Clock")

## Description

The A320neo has a build-in independent clock which sends time data to several systems. It has redundant electrical supply and is also directly connected to the aircraft's battery hot bus.

Functions :

- "UTC" (GMT) time in hours, minutes and seconds on the center counter.
- Elapsed time (ET) (from engine startup) in hours and minutes on the lower counter.
- Chronometer (CHR), which measures a time interval (from the pushing of the CHRONO button) in minutes and seconds.
- Date display.

## Usage

### UTC (GMT) counter

24-hour format clock.

### Elapsed Time (ET) counter

Tracks flight time

### Chrono (CHR) counter

Tracks elapsed time. Controlled by the CHR pushbutton.

First push starts the CHR counter and the second push stops the CHR counter but keeps the display at its last indication.

### Reset (RST)

Resets the chrono counter when counter is running.

### ET selector

- RUN:
- ET counter starts
- STP:
- ET counter stops
- RST:
- ET counter is blanked. Selector returns to its STP position when the selector is released.

Note: When alternating between "RUN" and "STP" a cumulative elapsed time can be measured.

### DATE/SET button

- First push:
- Date mode. The UTC time display is replaced by the date (day month year).

- Second push:
- Time mode. The date display disappears.

Note: In order to select the date mode, the UTC selector must be set on "GPS" or "INT" position.

!!! attention ""
In the FlyByWire A32NX the Date Set button must be held to show date. It switches back to time when released.

![Datalink Ctl and Display Unit](../../../assets/a32nx-briefing/front/DCDU.jpg "Datalink Ctl and Display Unit")

## Description

The Datalink Ctl and Display Unit (DCDU) is used by the pilots to communicate with Air Traffic Control (ATC) by the means of text messages instead of voice radio.

In addition to the DCDU, the MCDU is used to prepare a request.

!!! attention ""
The DCDU is not implemented in the FlyByWire A32NX.

![Instrument Lighting Control Panel](../../../assets/a32nx-briefing/front/ilcp.jpg "Instrument Lighting Control Panel")

## Description

These additional EFIS Controls help manage and adjust the main displays of the pilots.

## Usage

### OFF/BRT knobs

These knobs are used to turn the displays (PFD, ND) on and off, and also adjust their brightness.

- PFD
- If the PFD is turned off (knob turned all the way counterclockwise) the PFD image is automatically displayed on the NDU, but the pilot may recover the ND by means of the PFD-ND XFR pushbutton.

!!! attention ""
Currently PFD/ND XFR is not available in the FBW A32NX for Microsoft Flight Simulator.

- ND
- The outer knob adjusts the brightness of both the weather radar image and the EGPWS terrain display. The inner knob adjusts the brightness of the ND symbols. The ND is turned off if this knob is turned all the way counterclockwise.

### PFD/ND XFR Pushbutton

Exchanges the PFD and the ND. If the PFDU fails, the PFD automatically transfers to the NDU.

!!! attention ""
Currently not available or INOP in the FBW A32NX for Microsoft Flight Simulator.

### Loudspeaker Volume Knob

Adjusts the volume of the loudspeaker for radio communication.

- OFF:
- Radio signals are not broadcast on loudspeaker.

### Console/Floor Lt.

Adjusts the lights of the side console and of the briefcase on each side of the cockpit. Also adjusts the lighting of the floor around each flight crew member's seat. The lights can be set to bright, dim, or off.

### GPWS – G/S pushbutton

The Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) is warning the flight crew of potentially hazardous situations, such as a collision with terrain. It detects these and triggers aural and visual indications.

Five basic GPWS modes active up to radio height of 2.500 ft:

- Excessive rate of descent (Mode 1)
- Excessive terrain closure rate (Mode 2)
- Altitude loss after takeoff or go-around (Mode 3)
- Terrain clearance not sufficient (if not in landing config). (Mode 4)
- Excessive descent below the glide slope (Mode 5).

**Usage:**

- GPWS Lt:
- This red light comes on when any mode from 1 to 4, or any TAD (Terrain Awareness and Display) or TCF (Terrain Clearance Floor) alert is activated. A specific voice alert accompanies it.
- G/S Lt:
- Amber light when Mode 5 is activated. Accompanied by aural “GLIDE SLOPE” warning.
- Press to clear G/S light and “GLIDE SLOPE” aural warning (soft or loud).
- Test:
- On ground, press this pushbutton briefly for some of the aural warnings sounds and pushbutton captions, related to the GPWS, come on. Pressed continuously, then all the aural warnings sound.

## Description

The Integrated Standby Instrument System (ISIS) integrates the 4 classical standby instruments (Compass, Horizon, Airspeed, Altimeter) into one single instrument.

The ISIS system displays the following information:

- Attitude
- Airspeed and mach
- Altitude
- Barometric pressure
- LS function
- Bugs

## Usage

### ”+” / “-”

- Used to adjust the level of brightness.

### LS

- Pressing the LS pb will display the LS scales. Pressing the LS pb again will remove the LS scales.

### BUGS

- Pressing the BUGS pushbutton will activate the BUGS function and display the bug values to be selected.

SPD BUG and ALT BUG columns:

- The SPD BUG column gives four speed values (in knots) that can be selected by the crew.
- The ALT BUG column gives two altitude values (feet) to be selected by the crew.

### BUGS value selection knob

- It allows the bug value to be set by rotating the BARO knob. This value cannot be lower than 30 kt for a speed bug, or a negative value for an altitude bug.
- Pressing the BARO setting knob, once a bug value box is activated, will deselect the bug value.
- The “OFF” label comes on close to the activated box.
- The entered values are memorized by the system, when exiting the screen, by pressing the BUGS pushbutton (1), or after 15s without any pilot action.

### “+” / ”-” box activation buttons

- Access from one box to another is obtained by pressing the “+” or “–” pushbutton.
- When a bug value is entered, access to the next box is obtained by pressing the “–” pushbutton. The box becomes active and flashes.
- The “+” pushbutton can be used to return to a previous box.
