I'm getting the following error using both the gem version and the github version.

/opt/local/lib/ruby/1.8/openssl/ssl-internal.rb:30: [BUG] Segmentation fault
ruby 1.8.7 (2010-06-23 patchlevel 299) [i686-darwin10]

I saw on the mailing list that someone else is also getting this error.

Yeah, I seem to be having this problem as well. Are you on Snow Leopard?

I am encountering this on SL with macports as well, did anyone find a workaround or fix for this?

I never came up with a workaround. You could try an app called Logstalgia, which I was able to get working. It's not quite as configurable, and it took a bit of work to get set up with all the right dependencies, but could be neat to play with depending on what you're doing. http://code.google.com/p/logstalgia/
