Describe the bug

I've tried updating the UEFI firmware of my HP Elitebook 865 G10 from 1.3.9 to 1.4.10 but at the reboot nothing happens: it boots straight into zfsbootmenu and starts Arch Linux as usual.

In the past I used to use the built-in bios updater to upgrade up to 01.03.09, but now it wants to rollback to 01.03.05 for some reason:

Steps to Reproduce

  • fwupdmgr update (or Gnome Software)
  • reboot
  • nothing happens

I've tried disconnecting the Thunderbolt dock and attaching a normal USB-C power adapter, nothing changes.

Expected behavior
Updates the firmware.

What's zfsbootmenu? What's the output of sudo fwupdtool get-devices --plugins uefi_capsule -vv please.

It's a "bootloader" (which runs a patched linux kernel) capable of booting linux from a zfs root parition, doing rollbacks to previous snapshots etc: https://docs.zfsbootmenu.org/en/v2.3.x/
Basically my rootfs is zfs, plus the mandatory fat32 partition for efi.

Those show NVRAM devices, so we should have firmwar eupdate entry in efibootmgr -v. Can you deploy the update (with fwupdmgr update) but don't reboot yet and get the output of efibootmgr -v. Thanks.

By the way it looks like it doesn't put the updater into the efi partition:

Boot0000* Linux Firmware Updater	HD(1,GPT,210d5992-254c-4c6c-8b40-93bbd3891ede,0x800,0x219800)/\EFI\arch\fwupdx64.efi

The partuuid is different and points to /dev/zd0p1 which I have no idea what's supposed to be

[niko@arch-phoenix ~]$ sudo ls -al /dev/disk/by-partuuid/ | grep -i 93bbd3891ede

What's sure is that fwupdx64.efi is not in /boot/efi:

[niko@arch-phoenix ~]$ sudo find / 2> /dev/null | grep fwupdx64.efi
/usr/lib/fwupd/efi/fwupdx64.efi

The laptop's UEFI boot menu doesn't show the entry for the updater either:

That looks correct -- does rebooting remove this entry automatically?

The partuuid is different and points to /dev/zd0p1 which I have no idea what's supposed to be

fwupd found two ESPs, and ordered them like:

10:11:19.452 FuVolume mounting /org/freedesktop/UDisks2/block_devices/zd0p1
10:11:19.464 FuPluginUefiCapsule found /run/media/root/2230-C418/EFI/ubuntu/grubx64.efi which indicates a Linux ESP, using /run/media/root/2230-C418
10:11:19.464 FuVolume unmounting /org/freedesktop/UDisks2/block_devices/zd0p1
10:11:19.496 FuPluginUefiCapsule not a Linux ESP: did not find grubx64.efi|shimx64.efi|systemd-bootx64.efi in /boot/efi
10:11:19.496 FuPluginUefiCapsule more than one ESP possible:
 - 0x30433:	/org/freedesktop/UDisks2/block_devices/zd0p1
 - 0x20400:	/org/freedesktop/UDisks2/block_devices/nvme0n1p1

failed to update history database: failed to do post-reboot cleanup: no mountpoint for ESP

At least after reboot I think something is wrong with the ESP detection.

@superm1 does the fu_volume_get_mount_point() need to come after the fu_volume_locker perhaps?

I think so.

But also we don't look at all ESP candidates after the reboot AFAICT.

I think we do, we seem to use fu_uefi_capsule_plugin_get_default_esp() to get self->esp

That at least looks correct for post reboot cleanup, but I think the issue here is still the wrong ESP candidate being picked:

EspId: /org/freedesktop/UDisks2/block_devices/zd0p1

Probably because our heuristic expects GRUB or shim, but zfsbootmenu doesn't use those.

Ahh I see what you mean. We gave the score +0x10000 because EFI/ubuntu/grubx64.efi exists -- which is a weird thing to have on a non-ESP. I also wonder what's on /boot/efi -- @darkbasic what does sudo fwupdtool esp-list show for your actual ESP please?

Yes.

@superm1 does that make any more sense to you than me? I'm also a bit confused why fwupd thinks zd0p1 is a ESP... @darkbasic can you attach udisksctl dump pls.

Ahh I see what you mean. We gave the score +0x10000 because EFI/ubuntu/grubx64.efi exists -- which is a weird thing to have on a non-ESP.

I have a single disk with just two partitions: the efi (which doesn't have ubuntu/grubx64.efi) and the zfs rootfs, which doesn't have it either. I still have a hard time figuring out what /dev/zd0p1 is supposed to be.

EDIT: I know what it is! It's a zvol (basically a block device) that I used to hold an Ubuntu virtual machine to debug this zfs regression: openzfs/zfs#15351

If i'm following correctly then #6960 may help.

Yes, but there is a second issue at play here: fwupd shouldn't look for ESPs into zfs zvols. That's a recipe for disaster.

I know what it is! It's a zvol

But how does fwupd know that? The only helpful data we have is:

/org/freedesktop/UDisks2/block_devices/zd0p1:
  org.freedesktop.UDisks2.Block:
    Device: /dev/zd0p1
    IdType: vfat
    IdUUID: 2230-C418
    IdUsage: filesystem
    IdVersion: FAT32
    Symlinks: /dev/disk/by-diskseq/2-part1
				/dev/disk/by-partuuid/210d5992-254c-4c6c-8b40-93bbd3891ede
				/dev/disk/by-uuid/2230-C418
				/dev/zvol/rpool/zvols/ubuntu-23.10-part1
  org.freedesktop.UDisks2.Partition:
    Type: c12a7328-f81f-11d2-ba4b-00a0c93ec93b
    UUID: 210d5992-254c-4c6c-8b40-93bbd3891ede

...and that looks a lot like a ESP to me.

Yes,

Can you please test that branch? I'd like to know if it fixes the core issue before we go trying to get to your second point.

but there is a second issue at play here: fwupd shouldn't look for ESPs into zfs zvols. That's a recipe for disaster.

Hmm, what do we get back from udisks to tell they're part of zfs? I guess we can ignore /dev/zd prefix "Device"?

@hughsie thoughts?

I thought ignoring by symlink (e.g. a prefix of /dev/zvol) is probably the best we can do.

Sure.

Because it is! It's the ESP of the virtual machine!

Hmm, what do we get back from udisks to tell they're part of zfs?

Under Symlinks it starts by /dev/zvol

The regression seems to be fixed with your patch:

Unfortunately now the laptop is stuck at this screen since several minutes, I have no idea what it is doing and I fear to brick it if I turn it off and it's doing something:

Give it 30 minutes; it could be you're missing gnu-efi fixes or something.

The good news it that I didn't brick anything. The bad news is that it didn't do anything either :)
I've tried to manually open the boot menu via the F9 key and I selected the Linux Firmware Updater entry but this time I've got just a black screen. I have no idea how to debug this issue further.

it could be you're missing gnu-efi fixes or something.

Could you please elaborate?

😄

I have no idea how to debug this issue further.

See this part of the conffile:
https://fwupd.github.io/libfwupdplugin/fwupd.conf.html#uefi_capsule-parameters

We have a key you can add EnableEfiDebugging=true to a [uefi_capsule] section and this will capture debug logging for the EFI binary when you trigger an update with it.

So add that key, restart the daemon and then trigger an update.
On the next boot fwupdmgr get-results should hopefully have more debugging information for us on what exactly transpired.

By the way I've switched to the 1.9.x backports branch.

Hmm, that's missing the EFI debug log variable. Or it really didn't launch. @hughsie isn't that how it's supposed to work?

See #6976

Can you check if downgrading fwupd-efi or upgrading gnu-efi helps?

gnu-efi isn't even installed on my system, so I guess it's a build-time dependency? I can try to downgrade fwupd-efi 1.5 to 1.4, but first I'll try to rebuild it against a newer gnu-efi.

Sounds good.
Yeah it's a build time dependency.

Upgrading gnu-efi to 3.0.18 and rebuilding fwupd-efi 1.5 against it did the trick:

image

Unfortunately that doesn't mean the fourth issue was the last one because the new firmware update somehow broke the ethernet on my HP Thunderbolt Dock G4:

image

But that's not your fault if HP uploads untested crap on LVFS. I will try powering off both the laptop and the dock for a couple of minutes and see if it helps, it's not the first time I've seen such weird interactions after firmware upgrades.

I will let you know if I manage to get the ethernet back working but for the moment I'm closing this, thanks for your help!

As I suspected detaching the power cord from the dock and powering off the laptop was enough to fix the issue with the network card. Last time I updated the firmware it was displayport multi-stream which didn't work, it's really weird how it somehow keeps track of the previous state and becomes incompatible with the new firmware until a full power cycle.

superm1 added a commit to fwupd/fwupd-efi that referenced this issue Mar 25, 2024
Two issues have been reported root caused by using
gnu-efi 3.0.17 and fwupd-efi 1.5. They're fixed by upgrading to 3.0.18.

Do you have any insight why 1.4.10.0 has been removed from LVFS?

Weird, I can still see it here: https://fwupd.org/lvfs/devices/com.hp.laptop.system.V82.firmware

I would have bet that Gnome Firmware showed a Reinstall button before.
Is it possible that some firmwares can be reinstalled (like the following) and others not?

P.S.
1.4.10.0 is in testing (not sure if it was in testing before) but I still have lvfs-testing among my remotes.

The firmware might not allow a downgrade.
This policy is decided by the OEM.
This usually happens with security issues.

You can downgrade (there is a bios config which allows you to do so). I am sure because I've recently done so to debug a regression which ended up being a bug in Arch Linux's mkinitcpio. Also as you can see the button to downgrade is not grayed out, but the reinstall button is missing altogether. Maybe system firmware cannot be reinstalled to the same version?

Can you please show output for fwupdmgr get-releases? That should help clarify what's actually going on.

Also does fwupdmgr reinstall not work? If it works there this is a GNOME firmware bug not a fwupd bug.

I fear the issue is not in Gnome Firmware.
