Slingbox 500 has stopped working #661

Checkout "parental controls" on the router should do what you need. |
Thanks Gerry,
The router that the SB resides on is in a relatives home, so adding another
router would be a bit tricky.
The router is cable company issued (Optimum Cable). I have port forwarding
ability, but that's only inbound, and you
had indicated that this wouldn't solve. I don't have access to any
parental controls that I can see. The only other thing
available to me is port triggering, do you think activating a trigger for
outgoing port 5678 to a local address or the SB IP
might to it, or anything else?
Thanks
Bill

Some people have "hidden" their boxes behind any ol' cheap router and
don't configure the default gateway on the internet side. This will stop
connection requests from the slingbox from getting to the internet.

Gerry, I was hoping for a little more help. Slinger is connecting over
Wan, I bring up player/connect to SB500 and I get
the cable lock screen and audio. The browser based remote connects to
slinger and receives commands, but they
don't get to SB500. I've seen treads about changing Slinger port or port
8080 for remote. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Finally, the remote has worked but it's not reliable. This solution worked
for 2+ years flawlessly until about 3 weeks ago.
Any insights would be appreciated
thanks,
Bill

If you see the logs when you press a button on the web remote then the packets are getting through. Changing the port number won't help. All I can think of is now the IR to your cable box is obstructed somehow. You may want to dust it off and double check the connection to the SB. Worst case your hardware is starting to go bad but it's not very likely. |
Thanks for getting back to me. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
I did another power cycle on cable dvr and the slingbox 500. Additionally
I loaded your version 4 and slingplayer. Right now it is working, but I'm
not sure for how long.
The IR hypothesis could be spot on. What confused me was that I was
getting a Sling Media splash when the media player was started that I
didn't recall seeing before.
After that the the cable box was asking for any key to be depressed to come
off screen lock, which was normal. Just couldn't seem to get a command to
cable box.
I'm also going to see if a Broadlilnk Mini Blaster works. That would give
me a way to bypass the SB IR if the problem recurs. Again thanks. Bill

After resolving the IR issue by connecting a slingbox IR cable, that
function returned.
A couple of days later the slingbox fell off the network.
My suspicion is that the mother board may be dead.
I've connected the HDMI out to a TV and don't get any A/V
Slinger generates error message which should be expected as the Slingbox is
no longer active on the internal network,
even though it's physically connected via rj45 with verified cables.
The question that I have prior to giving up:
If I hit reset button on back of Slingbox 500, will I be able to attempt a
reconfiguration?
I have the admin password saved, but I don't have a Slingbox physical
remote.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
If this is the end of the road for me, I just wanted to thank you for your
efforts
Bill

Discussed in #651

Long time no contact.. Slinger still working brilliantly - once again thanks to Gerry.
I'm in the UK using a Virginmedia Superhub 2AC which does allow port blocking of port 5678 ( I think that was the one anyway ) to stop those nasty ( not the actual word I would have liked to use ) people at Slingmedia bricking my Slingbox.
At the moment I'm fine but I may have to move to a newer router from them due to the switch off of analogue landline phones which will mean I need a router with a phone socket on the back as I understand it. Sadly all the new Virginmedia have been dumbed down and don't have the port blocking facility anymore. Great !
I could run the Virginmedia router in modem mode and get my own router but that's two pieces of kit to maintain so IF don't really need to port block anymore then I don't have an issue.
So "Do I need to still block the Slingmedia port ?"
Cheers,
Steve
