Bug description

Follow-up to #8824 -- When creating a new GitLab project, the avatar of some specific GitLab groups look like a broken image:

Steps to reproduce

  1. Be part of one of these affected GitLab groups
  2. Visit /new and expand the group selection dropdown

No response

It seems to be working ok for all groups now but one, which is the one I don't have maintainer access or above. 🤷

I can verify this is still the case for groups you don't have maintainer access. Wondering if this could be an easy fix. Cross-linking relevant discussion (internal). Cc @jankeromnes @jldec
