feature: context plumbing

Description

Hey, It looks like there is a lot of additional context plumbing that's done on this commit here:
cb7479c

but I haven't seen any movement lately to get this into a stable version. What needs to be done to get another release out including this? Would it be helpful to submit a smaller patch which only includes some of the context plumbing to get that out on the version 6 branch?
