We'll need to get rfn permission in place, or persuade them to cease use of the rfn.

We'll also need to queue up the custom axis for registration

As well as the standard fontbakery QA checks, we'll need to review the glyph set and the axis.

The axis is currently wght but ranged 1979 to 2050.

This should probably be a MELT axis from 0 to 100, to make it possible to re-use in other fonts.

I chatted to the designer today and the intent was for the axis to be YEAR and range 1979..2050.

I suppose an axis ranged -4000..4000 could be used for lots of projects ;)

They will get back to us with a decision about the RFN, and their preferred Github location.

I expect we'll also want to onboard a set of static fonts, similar to Lexend, since the custom axis won't be available in Docs/Slides.

Ready for QA, however I'm getting two issues building the fonts:

1. FontmakeError "Axis 'Year': mapping output values must be in ascending order.”
   One instance value descends to correspond with data about sea ice shrinking, if I change it to ascend the font builds. Is there anyway around this?

2. Font Bakery lists a fail that I'm not sure of.

Sadly the way avar works it allows us to "bend" the space, not "fold" it.

I recommend you average it and create a flat segment.

To preserve the retrograde part of the variation, the solution is to add two masters at 1990 and 2000. This of course will add significantly to the size of the font.

Thanks for the responses. I updated the font with an average instance to keep the file size down.

The font is ready to go, we just need some axis registration for the YEAR axis.

Is the increased size from two extra masters a deal breaker? It’s a shame to mess with the data!

We can always try, depends if Dan is not tired by the font yet, and if Dave is okay with file size increase 🤷‍♀️

I'm OK. It will be possible to upgrade the font to the next generation variable fonts format and remove those masters and reduce the file size.

Okay, I'll try add the masters with Rosa. I'm not tired of the font, it was more not wanting to cause delays. Would be nice to keep the data.

Added to Q3 2022 milestone. Requires googlefonts/axisregistry#19 registration then we are prepared to onboard

This will work well with avar2. No extra masters, just remapping the YEAR axis. It’s a good demonstration for other fonts with retrograde portions of their interpolation.

@Lorp agree with you, although I wouldn't put the release on hold cause the font is not that heavy and I don't think the update with AVAR2 would create reflow when we'll update the font with it.
