When does it make sense to use this instead of, say, http://godoc.org/code.google.com/p/go.net/proxy#SOCKS5 ? Thanks.

When you want to connect to a SOCKS4 anonymous proxy server.
For SOCKS5, you can also look at http://code.google.com/p/go/source/browse/?repo=net#hg%2Fproxy
