Every time I look into this libraries have changed names, some abandoned, new ones exist... :)

Now in 2021 Convergence seems to be GPL licensed and maintained: https://convergence.io/demos/

There's a demo with real time typing showing carets and selections. The tricky part is that it needs docker which I don't have in my current server, so I would need to find a free host to experiment with that.
