I have recently upgraded the icewm package in openSUSE to 2.0.0 [1] which has unfortunately lead to a regression which causes icons to disappear in the application menu and taskbar:

I have already tried removing SUSE-specific patches but that didn't help.

The reason is that your openSUSE system apparently does not have imlib2-loaders installed.
OpenSUSE is the only OS that puts the image file format loaders in a separate package.
The wonderful side effect is that configuration, compilation and installation all succeed,
but that at runtime no images can be loaded, due to the missing imlib2 shared modules.
Luckily, everybody else packages the imlib2 image loaders in the imlib2 package.
See the https://ice-wm.org/scripts/os-depends.sh script for details.

Yes, installing imlib2-loaders manually fixes the problem. Thanks!
