Added app:config:status : https://devdocs.magento.com/guides/v2.2/release-notes/ReleaseNotes2.2.4CE.html.

Apply this change and avoid workaround as we were doing so far

That is not available yet. See last comment here: magento/magento2#12441

Maybe in 2.2.5?
