There are a variety of dictionary apps that run on Android and are compatible with files produced by HawDict.

Note: You'll need some way of managing the file system on your device so that you can copy the dictionary files into the correct folder(s).

ColorDict Dictionary

ColorDict Dictionary is a popular and free (ad-supported) dictionary app on Android. You can even download and install several popular dictionaries directly from Google Play from within the app.

Unfortunately, as of this moment none of the HawDict dictionaries are published on Google Play, so you'll need to copy the files manually to your device. Use the StarDict-formatted files, ie. all of the files ending with .StarDict.ifo, .StarDict.dict, .StarDict.idx, and .StarDict.syn.

ColorDict Dictionary Setup

  1. Install ColorDict Dictionary onto your Android device.
  2. Run the ColorDict Dictionary app at least once.
  3. Browse the file system on your device and look for the /dictdata/ folder.
  4. Copy the StarDict-formatted files into the /dictdata/ folder.
  5. Start ColorDict Dictionary.
  6. If the app doesn't prompt you to (or automatically) index the new dictionaries:
    1. Tap on the folder icon in the top-right corner of the app to view the installed dictionaries.
    2. Tap on the three vertical three dots in the top-right corner of the app and select Reindex.

ColorDict Dictionary should take a moment to re-scan and re-index the dictionaries you've installed.

GoldenDict

GoldenDict is a powerful dictionary app that works on a variety of platforms (including Android). While the desktop versions are free, the full mobile version is not.

However, if you're comfortable with side-loading an APK, you can download GoldenDict Free directly from their website. It's the same as the paid version except it limits you to just 5 dictionaries. Keep in mind that for HawDict, each translation direction (Hawaiian to English and English Hawaiian) each count as separate dictionaries.

GoldenDict Free APKs Free, 5 Dictionary Limit

Whichever you choose, the mobile versions of GoldenDict do not support all of the dictionary formats that the the latest desktop version does. As with ColorDict Dictionary, you'll need to use the StarDict-formatted files, ie. all of the files ending with .StarDict.ifo, .StarDict.dict, .StarDict.idx, and .StarDict.syn.

Note: If you're planning on installing and trying multiple dictionary apps, be sure to see the note at the end of the GoldenDict Setup to save you some time and space by not installing multiple copies of the same dictionary.

GoldenDict Setup

  1. Install GoldenDict onto your Android device.
  2. Run the GoldenDict app at least once.
  3. Browse the file system on your device and look for the /GoldenDict/ folder.
  4. Copy the StarDict-formatted files into the /GoldenDict/ folder.
  5. Start GoldenDict.
  6. If the app doesn't prompt you to (or automatically) index the new dictionaries:
    1. Tap the back arrow on you device (if necessary) to bring up the menu at the bottom of the screen.
    2. Tap on the three vertical dots in the bottom right-corner of the app and select Re-scan dictionaries.
    3. Tap Proceed if prompted.

GoldenDict will take a moment to re-scan and re-index the dictionaries you've installed.

Note: GoldenDict is smart enough to identify dictionaries installed for other apps. If you go into GoldenDict's Preferences, there's an option Other programs. Checking that box will cause GoldenDict to scan the folders that other dictionary apps use. In particular, it will scan the /dictdata/ folder that ColorDict Dictionary uses.

So, if you want, you can copy the StarDict-formatted files just into the /dictdata/ folder, and both ColorDict Dictionary and GoldenDict will be able to use them. It both saves space and gives you the option to compare the functionality of each app.
