There are a variety of dictionary applications that run on Windows and are compatible with files produced by HawDict.

GoldenDict

GoldenDict is a powerful free dictionary app that works on a variety of platforms (including Windows).

If you're on Windows 10+, the easiest way to get GoldenDict is here: GoldenDict on the Microsoft Store

Otherwise, that same version is available via ZIP or standard installer here: GoldenDict 1.5 Downloads

Note: Technically, version 1.0.1 is the latest "stable" release, but it was released way back in 2010 where it looks like development stalled for a while. If you still want it, it's here: GoldenDict 1.0.1 Downloads

I recommend using the StarDict format files for the best experience, though you can also use the XDXF files.

StarDict (Recommended): Use the files ending with .StarDict.ifo, .StarDict.dict, .StarDict.idx, and .StarDict.syn during Step 2 below.

XDXF: Use the files ending with .dict.xdxf during Step 2 below.

GoldenDict Setup

  1. Create a folder to store your dictionaries.
  2. Copy the dictionary files you want into the folder from Step 1.
  3. Go to the GoldenDict 1.5 download link above.
  4. Download and run the latest installer.
  5. Start GoldenDict.
  6. Go to Edit -> Dictionaries.
  7. You should be on the Sources -> Files tab.
  8. Click on the Add... button and select the folder in Step 1.
  9. If you've organized your dictionaries into sub-folders, check the Recursive check-box next to the folder entry you just added.
  10. Click Ok.

GoldenDict will take a minute to scan and index the dictionaries in the folder. From now on, GoldenDict will automatically detect any changes you make to the folder: adding, removing, updating dictionaries.
