i don't think i mentioned this before.

In ranger they have an experimental out of tree mpv method. It simply uses mpv to display the files. It makes no attempt at positioning the window or any weird hack, its just vanilla mpv. mpv has supported ways to be puppeteered in this way.

This is kind of strange, simple and alien.... It's worth considering.
