When logging text, one can specify an expected text, which is then used by the interface to show the differences.

It would be nice, and consistent, if the same existed for images. Bonus points if it also works for gifs :)

Do you mean just a side-by-side comparison or the actual diff? Image diffs are not trivial (except for binary images of course) and I don't think that it would be all that useful.
A side-by-side display can surely be added.

As for gifs, they will probably be looked at in more detail when videos are added, since they will include features that can also be applied to gifs (e.g. synchronisation or frame-advance).

Side by side views, or even overlapping views with a transparency slider to go from one to the other would probably already solve many use-cases.
