Connect to a CISER Custom Red Cloud Machine

Lars Vilhuber edited this page Feb 11, 2021 · 13 revisions

These are instructions for connecting to a specific CISER Custom Red Cloud Machine. This is to be used only for replications that require additional software to be installed (and that software is not available on the regular version of CISER).

Pre-requisites

  • If you are working from home (or off-campus), make sure to install and run the Cornell VPN. You can find instructions on how to do that here: https://it.cornell.edu/cuvpn
  • Make sure to have a working CISER ACCOUNT
  • You need Microsoft Remote Desktop installed.

Important information for replicators

The process of your replication will be a bit different when you need to use the CISER Custom Red Cloud Machine.

  • First assess which parts of the code require additional software beyond Matlab, Stata, etc.
  • Use your existing CISER account (or personal computer) to run ALL programs and code that DO NOT require extra software
  • Once you are sure that only the remaining parts of the replication require additional software, then follow the instructions below for connecting to the custom CISER machine
  • 🚨 Be sure to notify your supervisor when you first log in to the custom CISER and as soon as you log off of it. Be efficient with your time using this machine because LDI is charged for use of it.

Logging onto the CISER Custom Red Cloud Machine

You will access the custom machine the same way you do CISER, but with one change

  1. If you are connecting via VPN, make sure your connection is active. If you are connecting from campus, proceed to the next step.
  2. Open the remote desktop application you use for accessing CISER
  3. Under Computer, type the following IP address: (see IP address below, e.g. 128.84.8.xxx)
  4. Under User name, Type ciserrsch\abc123_RS (use your ciserrsch login name)
  5. Press Connect
