GitHub MathJax specifics

• Equation tags: ???
• Asterisks: use \ast instead of \*
• Subscripts: use \_ when breaks, e.g. \underbrace{x}\_{y}
• Curly braces: use \\{ and \\}
• Multiline equations: use \displaylines{}

Note that some of the solutions are MathJax-specific (like \displaylines{}) and aren't rendered with, e.g., KaTeX; and some are GitHub specific (like \_ and \\{) and are not rendered elsewhere (yup, frustrating).
