I had the same problem and frequently I got a black screen when I was booting mdm.
Those all problems were disappeared by typing the following command just after the installation of nvidia :

                    dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-kernel-dkms

I hope that can help.

Sorry. I wanted answer the problem MDM login screen disappears on boot/reboot and has to be restarted
I am new and I don't knwow how put the message at the right place. ...
