Fix reading/writing from urllib.request objects This backport needed to exclude nbagg optimizations.

Looks good. Thanks for doing this -- I didn't realize the backport would be so hard, or I would have just done this on 1.5.x to begin with. I'm comfortable with merging once Travis passes. |

It wasn't hard once I realized what the extraneous part was for. Travis is now green. |
