This repo contains files related to a draft translation of Woltereck's classic 1909 paper into English.

This translation is in progress. I will update it periodically as I find time to work on it. Currently I have a complete but unpolished draft.

I'm working on this translation because this seems to be one of those papers that people cite without reading. It is difficult enough to find the original German version, and even that isn't helpful for the large number of people who don't read German.

(It is also probably one of the most important foundational papers in genetics and heredity.)

Status

I have finished a translated first draft of the entire manuscript, including appendices and discussion. My abstracts and summaries of the article still need to be fleshed out.

I estimate that I will finish a polished version sometime in summer 2020, COVID-19 and childcare permitting.

Thorough revision of the translated text will likely be necessary before the text is fluent, but at this point it should at least be comprehensible to people who read English.

Further work

I have begun a brief article discussing this article and some other work in historical context and in how it has affected biological work today.

Caveats

1. I am not a native or even a fluent German speaker. I hoped to learn while carrying out this translation, but it's likely that I have made language mistakes in the process.

2. I am an employee of Phase Genomics. This project is unrelated to my work for PG.
