I was wondering, can I compile against an esp32? I noticed some of the includes are standard libs, or the timer registers are different?

This project is based on esp-open-rtos so it can't work with esp32. For esp32, you should use the official SDK espressif/esp-idf and it has built-in support for IR peripherals.

ESP8266 lacks hardware pwm to generate appropriate 38kHz IR signals so we need to use this library that uses i2s as hack.

If you mean to use this library in latest ESP8266_RTOS_SDK 3.2, which is now in esp-idf style, you can use my fork ESP8266-RTOS-IR of this library.

My fork is based on esp-idf style so it can be easily ported to esp32. However I think there's no reason to use i2s in esp32 though. If I any changes I get a esp32 board I'll try to test it on esp32 too.
