Known issues with OpenCore and Lilu will also obviously impact Kryptonite. Before opening an issue here, please check acidanthera bug tracker for similar issues. This document covers some common questions/concerns about eGPUs in macOS.

If your concern is not addressed here, reach out on egpu.io.

Can I use Kryptonite with Patched Sur and other similar hacks?

No. Kryptonite is designed to work with OpenCore and it is highly recommended that you use OpenCore-based solutions (such as OCLP) if required.

Can I update macOS while using Kryptonite?

Yes. macOS updates should work seamlessly unless Apple breaks something.

I cannot see my bootcamp partition using Kryptonite. How do I boot Windows?

Mac stuck when trying to update macOS

In rare cases, you may find your Mac stuck on a black screen or FileVault login screen (if applicable) when attempting to perform a software update. To fix this, first perform an NVRAM reset. Power down your Mac, hold OPTION key, and manually select the macOS Installer disk. If you don't see this disk, then select your boot volume. You may also need to re-setup your OpenCore disk. Follow the installation instructions again if so.

Unable to see OpenCore or Apple boot picker on eGPU-connected display

Display output over external GPUs is currently not supported. This is also true for Thunderbolt 3 Macs that natively support eGPUs, such as 2018 Mac mini. Apple recommends connecting a display directly to the device in fine print in their support document.

Unable to see login screen on eGPU-connected display

This happens if you are using FileVault. This is the same problem as above. Like the boot picker, the FileVault login screen is rendered by EFI, and thus cannot be seen on eGPU-connected display. You need to connect a display directly to your Mac. Thunderbolt 3 Macs are also subject to this issue.

Unable to boot after configuring FileVault

If you configure FileVault after setting up Kryptonite, it is possible for OpenCore to not boot. This is a known issue in the OCLP community: #323. To resolve, press OPTION key on boot and select your macOS boot volume manually to boot normally. Then follow the installation steps again to re-setup everything.

Internal (Mac) display stuck at boot logo but eGPU Display works fine

You likely disabled your NVIDIA discrete GPU. If you have an iMac, you must re-enable it. For Mac laptops with iGPUs, please follow steps to disable dGPU appropriately in Post-Install section.

Boot picker seen when waking from deep sleep/hibernation

This is a known issue with OpenCore: #1722 which needs to be resolved on that end. If this happens, you can just let the boot picker time out or press ENTER to resume on your current volume.
