I'm reorganizing the Tools page to hopefully make that more clear. There will also be a very different "Manage Services" page (which itself is new). For what it is worth, you should never really need to use those, except "Restart ALL Services" since it does the best job. Also,
I all of this is super new, so I have just been building tools and services out to be sure that everything functions properly. I will be putting together accompanying documentation once I know what tools and services are working and worth keeping. I plan to have this documentation both with_in_ and with_out_ the local installation environment, meaning you should be able to know and find out what you need to know when using the software, but can also access that information outside of the installation, in the GitHub Wiki to be precise.
This is doable and would be awesome! But I'm not super sure what all you would need. I can help with creating options to open the mariadb port 3306 and can add TLS through caddy proxying (and can add BasicAuth to that proxy for authentication), but I've not worked with tokens much before (if that's what APIs like most), but can work well with keys if that is of any help??? @CaiusX has tinkered a bit with accessing the database to grab statistics and run queries, so he may have some insight into the needs there? Offload to USB: very good idea to use the file manager for that! How do I manage to see and reach out to a USB stick in the file manager ? I plugged one in and it is not shown there. |

I'm not super sure. I'm afraid for now, until I can get my hands on a USB for testing, it may need to be a thing where you download the desired data onto a USB drive that is plugged into your laptop/desktop. Let me keep thinking on this -- I will try to get my hands on a thumb drive somehow to work with this and will let you know what I am able to come up with.:thinking: |

After running for a few days, I absolutely see the issue with false positives. I know that there have been discussions about the exclude-list - but just yesterday we had the following: We got a number of false positives for Strix aluco due to the loud speakers on a stadium some distance away (with 90% confidence, no less) But then later that same evening we got ACTUAL Strix aluco detections, and again at ~5:30 this morning. So I don't want to exclude it. What I think I want is to be able to tag some detections as "false positive" - and in a broader sense it might even be helpful to at some point feed high-confidence false-positive classifications back to those who trained the model we are using, in order to improve it over time... A nice workflow would be if the Database View also included a link directly to the audio file, as well as a way to one-click mark as a false positive. |

@Molokai I love both of these ideas
I would love being able to indicate false-positives -- I've offered to @kahst to try to feed BirdNET-Pi data back to Cornell, but never received a response. I agree that that data would be very valuable in training the next model against noise. Keep your fingers crossed that something changes in the future and that topic can be revisited with Stefan et. all.
I like this idea as a way to toggle a field in the database for "validity" or something along those lines. Empty would default with the assumption that it is valid, false would indicate otherwise. Now that I know you are familiar with SQL databases, what are you thoughts on storing the actual sound files and spectrograms in the database? I've read that it is better to keep media data separate if it is not necessary to keep it in the database, so I've been doing that (it is also easier). I appreciate any thoughts you might have on this. My best, |

I would agree that it is in general good advice to keep the sound files outside the database. Also makes it way easier to clean up / copy / listen to etc.. So I would not recommend changing that. |

It would be good to know what kind of data might be the most helpful in improving the training of the model - e.g. high-confidence false positives, more confirmed actual positives or whatnot. I expect that if it becomes fairly easy to tag false positives (and maybe also confirmed positive - as a stronger indication than default positive), they would be able to get a lot of decent data off of all the BirdNET.Pi's in the wild around the world, for some true citizen science. And even without that kind of collaboration, we might still learn things - like how wind gave me a certain kind of false positive, and the speakers at a nearby sports stadium gave different kinds of false positives - just like others on here have experiences for what are common errors in urban settings etc.. Which could lead to decent templates for exclusion lists or other kinds of refinement over time. |

@Molokai, have you requested a BirdWeather ID yet? @timsterc can weigh in on this more, but I believe that if you start participating in BirdWeather, that data makes its way back to Cornell. I could be wrong about that, though. |

Hi there, I'm still alive! Is there any possibility to also add scripts that show the top 10 for yesterday, week, month and year? Links on the page do not need to be created, it's easy to fix yourself. I tried to modify the existing script for today top 10 myself, but my skills in PHP is as close to zero as anything can be. |

I'm very interested in seeing the dynamic chart analysis as well. This would be really useful for seeing trends in which birds come and go throughout the seasons. Keep up the great work Patrick & everyone contributing! I'm really excited to see where this project goes. |

Thank you for your interest in BirdNET-Pi and for your kind words :) I am proud to say that @CaiusX has done a lot of great work getting some really serious (and pretty dynamic for such early days) database analysis through Streamlit that I hope you will check out on his amazing installation. His database goes back to around November of last year, and is very insightful! Ah, I didn't even realize the monthly/yearly chart was there! I just found the project a few days ago and don't have enough data for it to be populated yet. I'm seriously impressed with the fact that this project even exists, and how much work you all have put into it. Very very cool stuff, super excited to see how things progress. If I feel like I can help with anything code/bug/suggestion-wise I'll definitely chime in, but a lot of my methodology is just slapping things together and hoping they work, but I can see this project is quite organized, haha. You're in the right place!!! We slap stuff together all the time!!! :) We all use and love this software, so when we need new features, we talk it out, someone builds it, then we keep on going. If something old isn't good anymore, we replace it with something better (at least that is always the goal). So by all means, please help us with slapping things together and then make sure to always also help with going back and polishing things up and making them better, too :) |

After working perfect for a month or so my Pi today was not reachable from the web and I could not even log in to it from VNC or PuTTY. After power off/power on it was alive again, though with a bunch of old spectrograms to analyze. I have had a similar stop before and we then suspected it was some NTP issue, but that is taken care of and that service has not been down as I measure that. Could it be a buffer or anything else that has been filled up after long time? I don't know if this resquest has been discussed earlier when all new features have been implemented, but maybe a choise in the configuration to perform a reboot with a specified interval can be a way to prevent things like this? |

Hi, @Svardsten53! Good to hear from you! I'm sorry you had another glitch. I would love to discuss that further in an issue if you'd like to create one. Regarding the feature request, I don't think I'll implement a reboot schedule as a feature, but I will provide a quick way to accomplish this using In the webterminal: If prompted to choose your editor, select The line above will reboot the system at 2AM every day. Be sure to read the information in the crontab about how to alter the timing. The notes below should be helpful: So for instance Would reboot the system every half hour on Sundays. Would reboot the system at 5AM on the 5th of every month. I would like to get to the bottom of whatever if causing your system to lock up -- rebooting should truly only be a last resort, which is the only reason I'm not going to be creating a feature around it. Quick reply as always. A crontab solution was what I was thinking of, but I fully agree it's better to find the cause of what went wrong instead of just reboot the system. Maybe I should wait and see if it happens again and then run the command you suggested. Unfortunateley I didn't do that today. It seems that so much has been done in the new release (which I have not installed yet), so hopefully this will not be a problem in the future. As soon as you guys feel the release is stable I will upgrade and we have to come back how to do that. A complete new installation with the old database added or an update from the tools page? I wish I just had another Pi for testing, but as you all know it's almost impossible to buy new ones. I checked some Swedish internet shops today and they don't expect any new deliverys until october. Really sad! |

@Svardsten53 If you can get your hands on a spare SD card, that might be a the safest upgrade method, as it would ensure you still had your original system. I can help in migrating your old data. I doubt that an upgrade would cover all of the new features, but I am really curious about that and would really want to try. I think that if I were you, and I were concerned with keeping my data so far, I would do a clean installation on a new SD card, then mount the old SD card on the new installation and copy over the "By_Date" "By_Scientific_Name" and "By_Common_Name" directories and the Let me know what method you're going to pursue and I will put together some documentation for you (and others). |

I have the last few days done a couple of brand new installations and it works very well, even with the settings I have to access my Pi from the internet. Cool! As some of you know, I have some modifications and translations into Swedish and have had these implemented smoothly after an installation or update. I have written some simple scripts that copy the original files I need to change to another name to have a fallback, copy back customized files from the old installation and save the files I modify. I save all this on my NAS server and can then easily send this to the Pi computer when needed. It can be good to know that copying over an installation from an SD card to a larger one (32 GB -> 64 GB) does not work properly, at least not as I did. I took an image backup with Win32 Disk Imager and then wrote this back to a larger SD card. On the new card, you only have the size of the smaller card on the file system! I tried to expand the file system in RPi and think it worked, but BirdNET-Pi did not seem to like this, so had to do a new installation on the larger card. Maybe there are some other tools to use for this? |

I used the built in tool in Raspi-config. I don't remember exactly what happend, but the log was filled upp with errors. Of course I should have saved them, but was eager to get it up and running again before bed time. |

Great newsLike, really greatA non-GitHub user emailed me yesterday with the Holy Grail in BirdNET-Pi's quest to be as good as it can be. There are a few adjustments that need to be made to these scripts, but I have tested them and am thoroughly impressed. @DD4WH I value your input tremendously -- For what it is worth, just as a shout out so that everyone knows, since I've been working on this project, the times that Frank has pumped the proverbial brakes to have me think just a beat longer on the direction things are going have allowed me to avoid a lot of (BUT NOT ALL 😄) distractions. This is not to say that your requests are a distraction, @oliverk71, indeed I agree that it would be nice to have regional lists. I just mean to say that Frank's experience in this very niche field and vision for BirdNET-Pi's potential in field research is invaluable to me -- but I'm a hobbyist :) so we'll make it good for both : ) Anywho, that's just a shout out to @DD4WH for always chiming in when his expertise is needed |

@nilspupils Thanks for the link to the European/German labels.txt. I don't remember if it was you or someone else, but I already use the German labels.txt in my 4B which is still running v0.1. My 3B is only used for testing by now. @mcguirepr89 It is always good to have a lot of ideas, as brainstorming. But of course, after brainstorming you will need to come down to the most relevant things to not overload. |

Hi @oliverk71: Sorry but i just reread my reply and i was really unclear with what i wanted to get at. There are 2 distinct lists: the labels.txt (latin/german, 6362 entries) which is the full list of all species and should be standard with a german installation. Then there is the second list with only the local german/european species (latin/german, 457 entries). That second list was formerly called custom_species_list.txt, now this can be used as a starter for the included_species_list.txt if you want to begin with a populated list which has only 'localized' species. Not 'super-local' as you intended but still better than the worldwide list.... Best, Nils |

Thank you all for your comments, ideas, and suggestions! I am sorry for maybe being too critical of your plans and thoughts. Your suggestions (eBird data incorporation and habitat data and handling of exclusion / inclusion list etc.) are excellent and could of course solve many of the problems with false positives. The kind of philosophy I like, are systems that are transparent in the way they work:
Please do not feel disencouraged by my comments, keep on posting ALL your ideas and suggestions! Maybe it is just my different perspective of thinking BirdNET-Pi from an ornithologists view . . . |

I have a suggestion to split viewdb.php into two scripts and move the last part to a "species summary" script and in this remove the update interval or at least make it longer. As the solution is now, it is difficult to study species summary and statistics because the page is updated every 30 seconds and then jumps to the top of the page. The update is of course necessary for the first part of the page. I have made a quick and dirty solution on my installation ("Artsummering") and think it works better. It is done quickly and can certainly be done better if you can code PHP. I just removed the first part and changed the update interval. |

Hi @Svardsten53 I think that is a great idea. The species summary statistics end up being forgotten about tucked away under the bulk of the day's data. I'll likely put something together as you have suggested to provide a better collection of database stats distinct from the full database view. |

Thank you, a perfect instruction! I use to run a backup to my NAS now and then, but have not tried to restore yet. Then I know we can use this easy way for backup/restore without using BirdDB.txt. |

Maybe you can take this informations from the picture's metadata?
Size is better now, of course, but you still use a larger image and just render it smaller. It does not matter much for use in species statistics, though. |

This would be a good place for the thumbnail images that are available
I definitely agree, and mostly the images were a test and I think I like it as a quick way to see the bird without navigating to a new page. I don't want to add much more info, though -- I prefer just the links to more info.
I still have a lot of work to do to add localization support. It is one thing to just have translated pages (of which I have a few), but I'd like to have things be a bit more dynamic, as your friend as suggested. With that in mind, you'll have to be patient as I learn how to accomplish this :)

Bar chart in Species Stats I have a suggestion to include a bar chart, if possible, above the bird image, which should show number of detections for each week of the year for the choosen species. A rolling graphic would be perfect with the last week on the far right, so a whole year is covered back in time. |

I think it could be cool to have a "Weekly Report" type of thing, where the system analyzes the data from the past week and compares it to the week prior. So it might look something like: Weekly Report for Week 14 (4/11/22 - 4/28/22)Top 7 Species Last Week: Species Detected For The First Time: etc, etc. Then I think the obvious next step is to integrate this with the notifications system, offering a "weekly digest" sort of thing. Just some thoughts. |

Hey, unless i'm a dunce and i've missed it. Would there be a possibility of exporting the database as a neBird ready export? I know it's possible to jump into the database through tools but an easy 1 stop method would be best with the possibility of setting wanted dates. Hell an integration between the two would be alwsome. |

@DD4WH - Frank, noted. I agree completely with you, there should be NO AUTOMATED SENDING OF BIRDNET-PI DATA OR RECORDINGS to any party besides oneself (through apprise, although even this facility could be abused). Any other submissions, to e-Bird, Twitter or the like, must be manual with the submitter taking sole responsibility for verification. I would also discourage the automation of "e-bird" or other forms which make the submissions easier. At this stage I will keep my data analysis and enhancement restricted to the SQLite database and the long standing CSV backup. AP |

After looking at the Merlin app and how all of its observations are automatically flagged and made private when you go to import them with eBird, I think it's safe to say eBird doesn't want computer-assisted data under any circumstance, even if a human says "yep, this is definitely x species." Which is pretty unfortunate, BirdNET-Pi users have millions of good data points to contribute! One day... |

If that's the case i'll probs close my account with ebird. Bit silly of them to be honest, even if as you say, a human goes over the data and says "yep that's a blackbird". In my opinion it could even be more accurate but hey, such is life. |

I don't entirely agree with your example as in my case I would filter out the 300 sightings to two as I know the the pair live here. As an couter argument, my pair of buzzards go out of sight every twenty seconds. Would I have to recount every sighting of said bird (3h overhead / 20 s --> 520 sightings)? The data I uploaded to ebird was checked and every sighting validated by my part. All I want is an easier way of collecting the data than inputting every single bird that I've verified from birdnet. Who's stopping someone abusing the system and adding 2* more sightings? The standardization you talk about isn't possible when you let users add their own data. Again the whole idea was an easier way, not an automatic way. Moreover what's stopping me from going into the .db, compiling the data into a ebird accepted format and uploading? Nothing really, it's just a faff. Thats why I asked. |

While it sucks, it's absolutely necessary at this time to maintain the
cleanliness of ebird data and sanity of their mods. My birdnet finds
eastern screech owls and barn owls with surprising frequency in my suburban
neighborhood. Every band saw at a new home construction site sounds like an
owl to it. Even with 70% confidence filter, maybe 10-20% of the birds found
each day are incorrect.

I have the same situation at home and often the confidence level is above 80%. There are 3 persistent misidentifications I had - Barred Owl, Trumpeter Swan & Great Blue Heron. These occur when a car is getting locked and it makes the beep/chirp confirmation from the horn; a train comes by and blows its whistle at a nearby crossing about 1/3 mile away; what I think is s leaf blower or lawn mower. I added these 3 species to the exclude list this morning to see how things go. Up to now, I would delete them when they occurred after listening & confirming they were one of the 3 sounds I mentioned above. I'll have to see if the above sounds continue to get misidentified to different species. Discarding the above, the detection seems really solid and I'm amazed at all the various species that are caught from our feeders or flying by.

False owls seem to be a problem in all installations. I think I read somewhere that this is supposed to have been improved in the new analysis model from BirdNET. Has anyone heard when this model can be updated so that it also covers not only North America? If so, can it be easily implemented in BirdNET-Pi? |

the manual verification thing, if you listen to the audio call and make a
checklist manually, that's pretty legit. ebird wants to know whatever
birds you can confirm. as long as you are next to the sensor, and it's not
in some remote location:

Once we get to "know" the birdnet-lite algorithm's strengths and weaknesses we can put confidence cutoff on individual species, so highly likely species, put a low confidence (0.4 by my experience) and unlikely but possible species a high confidence (0.95), impossible species ( black swan) 0.995. The more feedback from users the better! |

I always verify beforehand. I know about most of the birds I get around my place, any I don't reconise I listen to the recording and check online about the call and where they live. Haven't had any negative feedback from ebird yet. It's just the same as compiling you own list and uploading. |

Here's another idea, adding a weather Api. Thinking OpenWeatherMap. Then you could correlate each detection with the current weather. At first glance it may sound useless but some birds will only call when it's sunny and not windy etc... |

Is is possible to add an option in settings to change the way daily charts are displayed? Currently it displays the top-10 and bottom-10. As discussed here #465 some people (including me), would rather like to see a complete rundown of all detected species by hour for the current day. So this could be a setting, depending on taste or preference. (I could probably change this on my system. However, that would make me hesitant to upgrade.) |

@Svardsten53 I know it's a 1:1, and I've used Birdnet-Analyzer before (only from a Mac with birdnetlib, though). However, it doesn't seem to be designed for efficiently displaying spectrograms and playing back sounds in large quantities - or am I missing something? With Birdnet-Pi, I could buy a few Raspberry Pis and analyze the recordings from spring in winter. |

@Vollpflock @tphakala For a step-by-step instruction (how to use a AOM5024) have a look here: With that setup I do not experience any hum and the audio is crystal clear (like you can hear in the publicly available BirdNET-Pi by @Svardsten53 Probably you already did that, but if you go into alsamixer, be sure to display all three level meters (output, input, Total) and crank them up to 80% or even max. If you do that, the volume of the AOM5024 is more than enough. By the way, my experience shows that you can not really improve the audio quality by using another USB audio interface (Yes, I have tried USB audio interfaces ranging from 5€ to 600€ price range, including Focusrite Scarlett and Clarett). Optimally shielding your mic cable is the key to audio quality, not the type of USB audio interface. At least thats my experience with the BirdNET-Pi and electret mic capsules like EM272 and AOM5024 (those are equally suited for this purpose). Have fun with the BirdNET-Pi ! |

@DD4WH Your insights on USB audio interfaces are very interesting. I've read about it from you before, but I wasn't entirely sure if that's still your perspective. Yes, I have everything set to 100% in alsamixer, but it's still too quiet for me. For instance, playing through speakers is not feasible, and I have to turn the headphones up all the way each time. I use the speakers of my M1 MacBook Pro as well as Sony WH-1000XM3 headphones. For reference, mine is about as quiet as that of @Svardsten53 (I haven't had it connected to the internet since the reinstall, so I can't provide a link at the moment). Or, in your opinion, would you consider the one from @Svardsten53 loud (https://birdnet.svardsten.se/)? I'm not the only one facing this issue; I've heard others in the forum having the same problem. @Svardsten53: Thank you, I seem to have overlooked it. I will give it a try. |
