Just a question, and not intended as a criticism. But why wouldn't you just use the web components specification to create custom elements?

Well, I could, but that'd have less readable element names and isn't strictly necessary. For assigning our own semantics to custom elements, without the need for appropriate browser API access, it's not necessary.

I mean, definitely do that if you want to, but this is an experiment in showing that it's not completely needed if you're just doing things like this.
