I'm thinking we only support this for SSH based repository URLs.

meet-tarantino/jules => git@github.com:meet-tarantino/jules.git

This is purely for convenience. I'm second-guessing whether we might be trading away something. For instance, is it ever possible that one might want to reference a repository mounted on the file system? I'm probably just raising FUD, though; and the downside is simply a future breaking change to not support the short-hand.
