Keyboard manager could be used to rebind mouse buttons -- especially side mouse buttons, to specific functions just like the current functionality for keyboard buttons.
Scenario when this would be used?
This would allow for unused or underused mouse buttons, such as mouse4 and mouse5 on the side of mice, to be able to be reprogrammed to more useful functions like controlling media playback, muting a microphone, or opening programs.
Supporting information
This exact same functionality is built into many different mouse brand's control software and even some third party software, ex. reWASD. The problem is that those other software solutions are often bloated and consume more system resources than keyboard manager.
