This PR makes a few minor changes:

  • Some docstring cleanup (see issue split_before confuse me #304)
  • Some formatting changes - like much of the rest of the Python community, I've found that black, while not exactly matching my preferences, makes multi-author codebases much nicer
  • Tests under Python 3.8

The next release will be version 8.0.0, which will have:

  • No Python 3.4 support
  • The collate() function deprecated
