In #308 which will be included in the 3.2.0 release we deprecated the sql repository type and the corresponding api and cli arguments to select a repository type. This issue is to track the removal for the future 4.0.0 release (which is planned for early 2022). We should make sure to only do this when we're done with the 3.x.x release series (or alternatively create a stable/3.x.x branch).
