installing the library with editable mode

Hello, I am unsure of how to install .toml packages (such as this projects) in editable mode. Trying:

pip install -e .

returns the error (A "pyproject.toml" file was found, but editable mode currently requires a setuptools-based build.).

Based on some googling I also tried:
pip install --no-use-pep517 --editable .

What is the recomended approach for installing this package in editable mode?
