On-stream today this was determined to be an artifact of the qemu video emulation combined with the default configuration of the text cursor position. And then the typical resources failed to even mention the relevant CRTC registers. Note registers at index 0Ah and 0Bh in http://www.osdever.net/FreeVGA/vga/crtcreg.htm
