Parsing errors like the one added in f97f69a leave the caller with no info at all about what went wrong. It would be useful to know what wasn't expected, so that the OpenID owner can tweak the page to deal with invalidities.
Lack of error messages bubble up to create situations like this one:

"Mistery failure" is the best a client application could report to users...
