Dashboards Anywhere - OpenSearch Management UI? #3160
Comments
Thanks for opening this issue! As we think about features/management tools that are specific to a particular BE (e.g. OpenSearch), let's think about how we a) make Dashboards more extensible and b) make those features extensions. |
@peternied I'm a bit unclear about the word "plugin" here. Are you suggesting that the management UI be a plugin to the Dashboards Anywhere product where it can be optionally enabled by the end user if they are using an OpenSearch backend? Or are you suggesting that the management UI be a completely separate product from OpenSearch Dashboards? |
Thanks @andrross for asking, by plugin I meant a new Dashboard's plugin that would collect the existing OpenSearch specific functionality and create space for additional features. |
@peternied Should this issue be moved to the OpenSearch-Dashboards repo? |
While I mentioned creating a plugin, this issue is really more about what actions OpenSearch as a product might want to take, which is separate from what the Dashboards product's ambitions. Maybe this is too abstract to take direct action on, but calling it out in case someone has passion for it. |
Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
OpenSearch Dashboards is starting a bold and ambitious project Dashboards Anywhere, where Dashboards will be decoupling itself from OpenSearch as its only backend. Radical changes in the available features will be possible and required as some UX constructs will not translate well 'without OpenSearch', such as the Console plugin that allows submitting requests and visualizing responses.
Describe the solution you'd like
We should know what is going to happen with existing tools that are OpenSearch specific and we should make sure OpenSearch users can get the most functionality out of Dashboards, even after it is Everywhere. Maybe there should be a new management plugin?
Describe alternatives you've considered
A clear and concise description of any alternative solutions or features you've considered.
