(doesn't seem to be anywhere in bugzilla here to log problems with the wms
server, so I've put it under the REST interface)
Sometimes I've notices that the image delivered by the WMS server, as used by
the java editing applet doesn't include the gpx points, just the landsat, which
is a right pain when trying to put nodes on a map.
(when refreshing a few minutes later, it seemed to work - is this some sort of
load limitation on the server?)

Yeah things are timing out based on load occasionally. I'm working on the WMS
stuff, and will see what I can do to make things better. The query that gets the
gpx points can take quite some time due to the way it works.
