Contrary to what is stated in several paragraphs on the page, LiveCDs are in fact installable.

There are also various remains of gettext calls visible:

They cannot be used to install or upgrade Tumbleweed. Please use the _('Tumbleweed installation media') instead.

Link: https://software.opensuse.org/distributions/tumbleweed/unsupported

Also, the URL is IMO wrong. If the URL refers to "unsupported", it should list all unsupported media and not just live USBs, which the title implies. It should be https://software.opensuse.org/distributions/tumbleweed/liveusbs or similiar instead.

Hi @Vogtinator

This will be changed in next big update. Here is a new website design on the way. Page structures was changed. LiveCD will have a new tab in download page. It will be mentioned as "unsupported" but no "They cannot be used to install..." anymore.

Ok, good to know, I'm looking forward for the update.
Thanks for your work!

@guoyunhe Any news on this?

@Vogtinator Sorry for late reply. The new site design is almost done but here is no promise when it will be deployed. Probably, after openSUSE Leap 15 release, they will deploy it. I will ask admin team again to confirm. I will reply to this issue when I got new information.

Ideally it should be deployed for the Leap 15 release, shouldn't it?

Ping. The new site design is there but it's still displaying wrong information.

Ping. I'd remove it myself (it's just a single sentence), but I wouldn't be able to test it.

Right now the test displayed next to Live images says:

Please be aware of the following limitations of the live images:

  • They should not be used to install or upgrade Tumbleweed. Please use the Tumbleweed media instead
  • They have a limited package and driver selection, so cannot be considered an accurate reflection as to whether Tumbleweed will work on your hardware or not

in https://github.com/openSUSE/get-o-o/blob/main/_data/locales/en.yml#L64-L67

Is this correct? Or do you think it should be adjusted?

I'd soften it slightly to say something like "Installation using the live media is not well tested, please use DVD/Net instead", but I don't really want to start a discussion about that, so this is IMO close enough.

What could be added is that the live media can't be treated like a portable installation (even with persistence), as bootloader/kernel/initrd can't be updated (https://old.reddit.com/r/openSUSE/comments/tw85sd/how_do_keep_live_images_updated/).

It's also not TW specific, currently this text isn't shown for Leap at all FWICT.

Adding it to Leap shouldn't be too hard. I will add a note about portable installation.
