Perhaps this broke it as theorised in the commit... f37375f4b8
I thought I annotated this but did not. Since it was a PR submission I tried to pick it up.

I see. What was wrong with the old method?
On my hardware:
root@opnsense:~ # sysctl -n kern.disks ada1 ada0 root@opnsense:~ # smartctl --scan /dev/ses0 -d atacam # /dev/ses0, ATA device /dev/ada0 -d atacam # /dev/ada0, ATA device /dev/ada1 -d atacam # /dev/ada1, ATA device /dev/ses1 -d atacam # /dev/ses1, ATA device
I‘m wondering the same, but it was a community PR so to avoid complains we can try and worst case revert.
