Project aims and scope

I think it would be nice to talk about the project aims / scope.
This project is very interesting to me because it seems to be the most decentralized, private and secure platform that is out there, and the amount of progress on this one project alone is great to see.

Is there going to be a limit on project scope? Will it just be a DM / group type app or will it have support for communities (multiple groups, roles and permissions)?

I see matrix/element has tried to implement something similar to discord's servers, but in its current form I feel like it is just a list of groups instead of a 'server'. It would be nice for something like servers to become a thing (IMO), even if starting in a simple form, like just an organizable list of groups.

Also another thing - What will be the direction of open groups? I may be completely misguided about this but why not use the structure of what are now called 'private groups' for the structure of open groups too. Then would it be more decentralized or are there limitations stopping this?
